About Us: Barnhill is a heavily oversubscribed, high performing school that places wellbeing and quality of life at the heart of its ethos. The Role: An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the English department of Barnhill Community High School.

Our English Department is at the centre of the curriculum at Barnhill. We have a dynamic and forward-thinking team dedicated to fostering critical thinking, communication and collaboration with an ambitious and inclusive curriculum. A wide range of texts are delivered, creating a dynamic and exhilarating curriculum for our pupils; literature is placed at the heart of teaching and learning in order to engage and inspire our pupils as young readers

A department of 11 teachers, with an innate passion for their subject, which is reflected in their teaching and students’ attitude to learning in lessons. The English department is thriving, where student progress at GCSE and A Level has been well above national averages for many years with disadvantaged students’ outcomes closely matching their peers. Our progress 8 score was 0.54 in 2024 (significantly above average) with A Level progress in the top 25% of schools. We also see high numbers of our students’ progress to Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities, studying English related degrees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To be a member of Barnhill Community High and be responsible for the safety, welfare and educational progress of groups of students as assigned by the Head Teacher and to take an appropriate share of collective responsibility for all students.
  • To teach a timetable commensurate with the post.
  • To positively contribute to the efficient and effective planning and running of the English Curriculum Area.
  • To contribute to the development of the school ethos.

What We're Looking For:

  • Qualified Teacher Status in the relevant or related curriculum area.
  • Experience of teaching within age range to be served by the school (11-18). (This may be obtained from teaching practise).
  • A positive, enthusiastic outlook, embracing risk and innovation.
