Teacher of English job summary
An exciting opportunity for a passionate & dynamic teacher to join us. Our English curriculum includes English Mastery in Year 7 & builds to GCSE Literature & Language. If you want to join an outstanding team, don't let this opportunity pass you by!
The English department at OAJW consists of highly dedicated individuals who ardently believe in the power of the spoken and written word. The curriculum is intentionally sequenced so that students understand, question, critique and create rules, stories and patterns in literature and, more broadly, in society. What drives the department, is the unwavering belief that all young people, no matter what their starting point, can, and will, thrive if taught to articulate their own beliefs and communicate purposefully. We believe that all our children should be taught to master English and be encouraged to develop a lifelong love of Literature.
At Key Stage Three, students study a culturally diverse range of both classic and modern texts and we encourage them to become curious and critical thinkers, as well as confident readers, so that, by the time they reach Key Stage Four, they are ready to tackle GCSEs in AQA English Language and English Literature. Knowledge of genre and literary movements is sequenced so that students master the foundational concepts before moving on. A particular strength, is the deliberate delivery of powerful and versatile vocabulary; vocabulary instruction is tailored and embedded in every lesson.
English is a popular subject at OAJW, supported by positive relationships between teachers and students, alongside the deep subject knowledge of teachers, who are genuinely excited to share their love of the subject, and this is reflected by the numbers of students who attend extra-curricular sessions, taking part in clubs, such as ‘Oliver Twist: A Dramatic Production’. Departmental CPD is run on a regular basis and the team is characterised not only by a collaborative approach to co-planning but the expectation that we will learn from each other.
Commitment to safeguarding
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all staff to share this commitment and to undergo appropriate checks, including enhanced DBS checks and a willingness to demonstrate commitment to the values and behaviours which flow from the Oasis Community Learning ethos. Oasis Community Learning supports Equal Opportunities Employment.
