What skills and experience we're looking for

The English, Media and Drama department at QKA are award-winning, with an ambitious and aspiring team. The team were awarded the TES English Team of the Year 2021 award for their delivery of a ‘multi-layered approach in bringing texts to life for students, as well as the uniqueness of the curriculum and the ways in which diversity in literature is strongly embedded’ (TES Judges). The team were also shortlisted for the Bernice McCabe Award and were commended by the PTI for their work on the growth in their KS5 provision and social mobility. We have recently taken on the leadership of the Media department which has created lots of exciting opportunities for growth and development.

The department is well resourced and led by fantastic practitioners; we are looking to appoint a colleague who shares their enthusiasm and unwavering determination to help every student enjoy, achieveand progress inEnglish and Media from KS3 through to KS5. In Sixth Form, A Level English Language and A Level English Literature are delivered and in bothsubjects, students make well above average progress given their starting points. Media Studies at KS4 and KS5 is a popular option which we continue to offer every year.

Our English, Media and Drama Department continues to grow; as a result, we are looking for an engaging and forward-thinking individual who will enhance and augment the existing team.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a school within one of the well-regarded Trusts in the eastern region. The school has a great history of success and a bright and exciting future and we are looking for an ambitious and dynamic teacher to steer it through the next stage of its development. Collaboration, educational research and professional development are at the core of how the schools within Thomas Deacon Education Trust work together.

What the school offers its staff

The Thomas Deacon Academy that we know today opened in 2007 as one of the UK’s first and largest academies. Whilst a building does not make a school, it is worth noting that Thomas Deacon Academy was designed by Norman Foster and Partners and in addition to our impressive main academy our beautiful 43-acre campus includes TDA Juniors - a modern, light, and purpose-built Key Stage 2 facility - and expansive playing fields and sporting facilities.

Moving forward, our vision for the academy is a simple one: we want every member of our learning community to be the very best that they can be and achieve their full potential.

The academy’s core values of Trust, Discipline and Aspiration define who we are as a community and how we learn together. We believe that every member of our learning community should have the highest expectations and standards, showing trust and discipline in all that we do.

In September 2018, a new extension to the existing main building led to new accommodation being created for a sixth form study centre, refectory expansion and staff professional learning centre.

In September 2019, TDA received a very positive Ofsted report, judging the academy to be Good overall. Ofsted commented favourably, amongst other things, on the overall leadership of the academy, good teaching, positive relationships between staff and students and students’ behaviour. These aspects of the academy have been maintained alongside the identified areas for development being addressed.

Further details about the role

The Trust offers:

  • Excellent salary package and Teachers’ pension scheme.
  • Fantastic training/CPD opportunities in a friendly supportive environment.
  • Opportunity for progression across Thomas Deacon Education Trust.
  • An engaging, creative and welcoming environment to learners who take pride in their school.
  • An inclusive and collaborative approach.
  • A talented, highly motivated, committed and professional team of colleagues, both within the school and across the trust.
  • An actively supportive Academy Committee and Trust leadership.

Thomas Deacon Education Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The Academy will require the successful candidate to provide satisfactory references and undertake an Enhanced Check with the Disclosure and Barring Service.
