What skills and experience we're looking for

We are looking for a well-read and creative teacher of English. You will be joining a collaborative, progressive department which is committed to instilling students with a love of English. You should be a committed classroom practitioner with a passion for reading, creativity and pedagogy, finding ways for students to succeed, as well as advancing your own professional development. We are looking for someone who brings energy and pace to teaching English, with a style that engages all students. You will need to be willing to contribute to the department's highly collective approach to developing schemes and resources to ensure that all students receive an equally high-quality experience. As well as this, we look forward to hearing what you would bring to the department's extensive extra-curricular offer.

What the school offers its staff

  • Many opportunities for CPD in subject knowledge, pedagogy and leadership through numerous platforms.
  • A supportive work environment.
  • A commitment to wellbeing including incentives such as health care provided by Simply Health, free staff parking and tea/coffee, and respect for professional autonomy.
  • An open culture, where colleagues feel safe in disclosing any mental health conditions and one in which every individual feels properly supported with reasonable adjustments being discussed and offered when required.
  • Opportunities for collaboration through academic links through the South West Academic Trust, a group of schools including Torquay Girls’, Churston, Colyton, Bournemouth, Poole and South Wilts. Grammar Schools, which works with staff from Exeter University to extend the challenges and opportunities for both staff and students.

Further details about the role

The English department operates within a strongly supportive team framework where everyone is valued. There is a culture of joint planning, through continual exploration and sharing of teaching and learning opportunities.

Groups in years 7-11 are taught in six lessons per fortnight. Students in years 7-9 follow a common syllabus, featuring fortnightly drama, library and computer-based lessons, which has been written and is annually reviewed by department staff, to ensure that the scheme of work is sufficiently challenging and imaginative to suit the capabilities and interests of our students. We advocate the use of AFL on a regular basis and use our own programme of assessment materials periodically to accurately assess pupils’ progress in each assessment focus.

At Key Stage 4, where all students currently follow the Edexcel courses in both English Language and English Literature, students are encouraged to realise their potential in reaching the highest grades. In addition, there is a Media Studies group at GCSE level. Results and progress are consistently outstanding, thanks to detailed and rich teaching with high expectations.

English Literature is a very popular choice in the sixth form, with over 100 students following the Edexcel A-level Literature course or the IB Diploma. There is also an A-level Media class each year.

Accommodation is within a suite of eight English classrooms (one of which is equipped with computers, and one a drama studio). Extensive use is made of the vibrant library and new lecture theatre, whilst the media facilities include a mac room. In addition, there is a high level of resourcing in both books and equipment.

Students get to extend and enrich their skills through a rich programme of extra-curricular opportunities and competitions through the year including the whole school musical which attracts over 100 participants, literature extension group, drama club, TBGS radio, film club and more.

Do you believe that young people should be inspired to ‘Dare to Be’? Or ‘Dare to Dream’? Or just ‘Dare to ….? This is the TBGS mantra and says everything about the aspirations that we wish for our students.

We are an academically selective school set on a beautiful, green site on the edge of Torquay in South Devon, producing outstanding examination results, but we are also known as a school that dares to provide a truly holistic education for our young people together with a strong pastoral commitment to the well-being of both students and staff.
Since 1904, we have been educating able boys and since 2010 have extended our intake to able girls in the Sixth Form. The feedback we have received, and the evidence of our students’ excellent examination results, suggest that we are continuing to provide a first-class education.
Our TBGS students are encouraged to enjoy learning for its own sake, developing creative talents and fulfilling their intellectual potential; our caring environment and strong pastoral system nurtures this academic excellence.

Dare to join us!
