What skills and experience we're looking for
The successful candidate will join a strong and committed team of teachers within the Design and Technology department. As a teacher of Food Preparation and Nutrition, you will play a pivotal role in inspiring students aged 11-16 to develop practical cooking skills, a deeper understanding of nutrition, and an appreciation for healthy eating. You will teach a range of food topics, from basic cooking techniques to advanced culinary and presentation skills, and pro-mote a positive approach to nutrition and well-being. Our department is dynamic and forward-looking, driven by determination to build on our strengths and broaden our capabilities. We offer professional development opportunities, including liaising with other schools and additional training with exam boards. As part of a supportive and passionate team, you will work closely with the subject leader, committed teachers and technician.
Food Preparation and Nutrition is popular at GCSE level, and students are engaged and enthusiastic about the subject. We have excellent relationships with our pupils, who are motivated and eager to make progress. We aim to deliver a curriculum that is accessible to all, providing a wide range of opportunities for students to become self-motivated and confident learners. Students are encouraged to work both independently and collaboratively, developing technical and practical skills along the way. As a teacher of Food Preparation and Nutrition, you will deliver high-quality lessons, ensuring that the curriculum is followed while adapting lessons to meet the diverse needs of students. You will also contribute to curriculum development, ensuring it remains current with food trends, industry practices, and nutritional guidance.
In addition to classroom teaching, you will monitor student progress, provide feedback, and prepare assessments to allow students to showcase both practical and theoretical knowledge. Maintaining a safe, organized classroom environment is essential, with an emphasis on fol-lowing health and safety guidelines, particularly when using equipment and food materials. Finally, you will engage in continuous professional development to stay updated on new trends and pedagogical approaches in food and nutrition education.
Curriculum Structure
The school operates a 30 period week, with lessons of 50 minutes.
Pupils are taught in sets, either in half-year or full-year blocking. Pupils at key stage three have a double period per week of Design and Technology and study food on a rotation with other areas of Design and Technology. At key stage four, pupils will have a double and a single lesson every week.
Teachers are issued with laptops and ipads to support the teaching, learning and assessment of students.
