What skills and experience we're looking for
TEACHER OF FRENCH – SEPTEMBER 2024 (PART-TIME) - (0.4-0.5)
Required from September 2024 an enthusiastic, well-qualified teacher of French to join an excellent department and teach bright, well-motivated pupils in a supportive environment. French, German and Spanish are taught at TWGGS, each led by a Teacher in Charge and overseen by an MFL Curriculum Leader. In total, there are 10 language teachers and a number of them are dual linguists; the successful candidate would be expected to teach French at least to KS4 with an ability to teach Spanish would be an advantage. The team is also supported by language assistants who provide conversation lessons for GCSE and A Level pupils.
TWGGS is an 11-18 girls’ selective school of about a thousand pupils, where pupils are encouraged to be as active beyond the curriculum as they are within it. Trips, visits and extra-curricular activities are unrivalled in the state sector, but, more importantly, it is an amazingly happy, positive community to be part of.The prospectus is on the school’s website which may be found at www.twggs.kent.sch.uk; the school prospectus and website will, we hope, give you a feel for the atmosphere and ethos of TWGGS.
All pupils currently study Spanish and German from Year 7 and French from Year 8. At the end of Year 9, pupils opt to continue with one, two or three languages. Lessons are conducted in the target language from the start, and pupils are very confident. The high quality of oral and written work is reflected in good results at all levels. French at Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar School (TWGGS) achieves very good results at all levels. At A Level in 2023 75% of pupils achieved A-B grades and in GCSE 46.5% of pupils gained grades 7-9. We currently run three classes of GCSE in Year 10 and Year 11, one class of Lower Sixth and one class in the present Upper Sixth. A number of A Level pupils go on to study languages at university with notable success.
The school works to a fortnightly timetable of 48 one hour lessons. The specifications and time allowances for languages are:
A Level Eduqas 9 lessons
GCSE AQA 5 lessons in Year 10
5 lessons in Year 11
Key Stage 3 Year 7 3 lessons in German and Spanish
Year 8 3 lessons in German and Spanish, and 4 in French
Year 9 3 lessons in French, German and Spanish
All language classrooms have interactive whiteboards; there are also four ICT suites and three sets of laptop notebooks within the school which are bookable for lessons, which are widely used by the MFL Departments. We are looking for an enthusiastic, well-qualified and confident speaker of French who would strive to instil her or his love of the French language to our pupils.
If you would relish the opportunity to join TWGGS and get involved in this busy, happy community, application is by completion of the TWGGS application form, accompanied by a supporting letter; this should outline your skills, strengths and experience, stating how you feel these suit you for the post. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 17 April. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
If you have notheard from us by Friday 3 May, please assume that, unfortunately, your application has not been successful. We should like to wish you well in your future career whether at TWGGS or elsewhere.
