Teacher of Geography and Head of Learning, Year 7 job summary

Discover what we can offer you

Would you like to work nine days but be paid for ten? What really sets The Highcrest Academy apart is our staff: their passion drives our progress and transforms the way we think and work and in return, we are committed to their well-being and mental health. We understand the pressures that working in education can place on individuals and are always looking for ways to improve working conditions and offer our staff incentives that are not always available in education.

From September 2024, we have implemented a 9-day working fortnight for all permanent staff. The premise is simple, you will work nine days but be paid for ten, using the tenth day to ‘reset’, and thus giving you the opportunity to manage your work-life balance more effectively. You will also enjoy an additional Wellness Day each year.

Feedback from our current staff is unsurprisingly positive! The thought of coming back after a break was less overwhelming and staff say they feel more relaxed, recharged and ready for whatever the next nine working days bring! Plus they save on travelling time and expense and have a little more flexibility.

Could this make the difference you need?

Add to this a significant investment in your professional development and the possibility of onsite accommodation if you need to relocate, plus facilities that are second to none, including an excellent canteen, gym and coffee shop.

We are seeking to appoint an excellent Geography teacher to join our growing team of Geography specialists within the Humanities department. The successful candidate will teach across Key Stage 3-5 so will have exceptional knowledge of Geography and experience of teaching AQA GCSE, and ideally, A-Level, Geography.

The role will involve working as part of a team to implement and adapt schemes of work and assessments from KS3-5 when required, alongside other specialists. Experience of leading or undertaking fieldwork is desirable. The ability to teach a second Humanities subject at either GCSE or A-Level would be advantageous.

The Humanities department includes subject specialist teachers in Geography, RE, History, Politics and Law. As a team, we are hard-working and motivated to allow all students to achieve success in their chosen area of study. The department makes challenge for all the centre of their pedagogy and strives to make lessons enjoyable for students, to encourage a love of learning. We are keen to run trips and extracurricular activities to offer pupils new opportunities, developing pupils’ cultural capital. The department has seen a growth in the number of students choosing options within the humanities disciplines, both at KS4 and KS5 so joining us now could offer some exciting prospects. This is an excellent place to develop your teaching and share expertise with other experienced members of staff

In addition, you will join our Inclusion team as Head of Learning to our Year 7 students (from September 2025), line managing an Assistant Head of Learning, as well as a tutor team. As a team, you will ensure all students get the best possible pastoral care throughout their time at Highcrest, sharing responsibility for the learning and personal development of all students. You will also work closely with our Heads of Department, moving through the years with your year group to ensure they maximise their potential.

This part of your role includes leading and monitoring a tutor time programme, organising and monitoring Life Lesson, as well as taking a strategic lead to ensure the students display the highest level of attendance, punctuality and behaviour throughout school.

We would be keen to speak to you as you take your first or further steps into Middle Management.
