Teacher of Girls' PE (maternity cover) job summary

We are looking to appoint an inspirational and dynamic Teacher of Girls' PE (maternity cover) from January 2020 to teach a wide range of activities across the curriculum, including GCSE, with the potential to teach A Level.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join a leading and dynamic department that achieves very good results across all areas of Physical Education at both GCSE and A Level standards, benefits from excellent facilities, and offers a wide range of co-curricular opportunities.

At KS3, years 7 and 8, all pupils follow a broad and balanced Physical Education curriculum in which the successful candidate will teach netball, hockey, swimming and athletics amongst other activities. Pupils experience and enjoy a physically active approach to learning in which they develop a range of skills suitable for a theoretical and practical GCSE qualification at KS4. Through a breadth of practical activities that build upon prior learning, pupils develop their range and quality of skills, physical attributes and decision making.

Students are able to select to study GCSE Physical Education and the course has proved to be popular with three Y r9 teaching groups, two Yr 10 groups and two Yr 11 groups in 2019. At A Level, Physical Education is also popular with one group in both Yr 12 and Yr 13.

The department comprises 6 full-time & 1 part time member of staff who are committed to raising standards and enabling each pupil to achieve highly. Facilities include a 4 badminton court sports hall, with a fitness suite and 2 specialist classrooms for teaching academic PE. Additionally, pupils enjoy lessons on the well-maintained sports fields, which include 3 rugby and football pitches; a swimming pool; an astroturf and a further indoor gym facility.

A broad range of co-curricular activities is on offer all year round, which both complements the curriculum and offers new opportunities and these are well attended by pupils across all year groups. Pupils have a number of opportunities to compete within the local area, county, region and on the national stage as individuals and as part of a team. The co-curricular programme is supported by additional specialist members of the school community.

The successful candidate will be a committed practitioner, who will seek to attain the highest standards in teaching and learning along with a fulfilment of practices and competitions, including weekend fixtures. The successful candidate will be fully supportive of the Church of England Academy ethos and tradition and expected to contribute to the full life of the school.

Ripley St Thomas Church of England Academy is situated in the historic City of Lancaster within easy distance of the wonderful scenery of Morecambe Bay, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

The academy is a member of The Bay Learning Trust and is a School Centred ITT provider.

Ripley has a deeply embedded Christian ethos and a tradition of nurture and service within a strong school community. Our young people are delightful, eager to learn and make a positive difference in society.

Ripley is a large and very successful school with a long history and great tradition. We were designated as Outstanding in all categories in our most recent inspection. In addition, we were designated Outstanding in our recent Church School inspection and in the Ofsted inspection of our teacher training provision.

There are currently over 1700 students on roll with 300 of those in the sixth form and there are around 180 staff.
