Department Information: Health & PE

The PE department comprises 10 members of staff, four part time and six full time, with a combined wealth of experience. Three members of the department work in senior leadership and have additional, whole school responsibilities. The department is led by the curriculum leader with support from the assistant curriculum leader, but the whole team work together to produce outstanding lessons and experiences for our students. We have a strong team that support each other in all areas of school life.

Practical lessons are facilitated by the use of a 3G Astroturf, a full size sports hall, a gymnasium with sprung floors, and a fitness suite with all modern equipment including treadmills, bikes and free weights. We also have a dance studio with mirrors and a sound system, as well as a school field and outdoor MUGA area. The school site houses a purpose built orienteering course that makes up a large portion of the core PE curriculum, utilising the amazing countryside that we have at our disposal.

Students are taught in ability set PE groups for core PE, allowing all students to achieve their full potential and receive a differentiated curriculum based on their set. Baseline testing is conducted at the start of every year to ensure students are placed in the correct ability set. We cover all areas of the NCPE except swimming, due to the lack of a pool. All core PE lessons are linked with our KS4 curriculum, focusing on key words, literacy, numeracy and ICT integration. The online learning, we delivered in recent months has allowed us to expand the knowledge base of the KS3 students and prepare them even more appropriately for their KS4 courses.

Our KS4 courses comprise of four different accredited routes: GCSE PE, Sports Studies, Dance and Health and Social Care. The PE department deliver all of these oversubscribed courses to the KS4 students in addition to Core PE once a week.

Health and Social Care is our most popular course with around cohorts of 70 students each year, and rising. The course is run by Pearson and is the new BTEC Technical Award. The course has 3 components, including the opportunity for work experience in C2 and the introduction of a synoptic exam in C3.

Our Year 11 students traditionally excel in Health and Social Care, due to the outstanding lessons and positive relationships built between staff and students. Our results in recent years have averaged +1.25 for progress 8 and are steadily rising, due to the investment in teaching staff and Health and Social Care provision. We have a fully equipped ICT suite for use in lessons, which allows students access to resources and the ability to complete coursework during lesson times, reducing the need for home learning.

As expected, the PE department run a host of varied and inclusive extra-curricular activities at both lunch time and after school. Staff are expected to be involved with at least one club per week in order to provide students with a range of activities. We are very successful in the local and regional leagues at our main sports, netball and rugby.

This is a wonderful opportunity to join an experienced and supportive team.
