Caedmon College is an established, successful, popular and growing 11-18 community school situated in Whitby on the North Yorkshire Coast. As a school, we have very low staff turnover and high staff retention. As well as living in the town of Whitby and its beautiful surrounding areas, colleagues travel from areas such as Redcar, Guisborough, and Ryedale, as well as from Scarborough and Filey.

Since welcoming our new Principal in September 2018 we have federated with Eskdale School, our neighbouring secondary school in Whitby. This is beginning to benefit our students and provide wider professional development opportunities for our staff. Recruitment of new students into the school is buoyant.

Caedmon College is located on two sites about 5 minutes walking distance apart: our Normanby site hosts students in Y7-11; and our post 16 students are based at the recently refurbished Whitby Sixth Form site.

We are:
• A ‘Good’ school in every area by Ofsted in 2017.
• A school where British values are at the heart of our curriculum – so that all our students leave school knowing how to conduct themselves in the wider world.

Our opportunity

In what is our first external teaching post for a few years within Humanities we are looking to appoint a specialist History colleague to join our department, which is fully staffed with subject experts.

You would join a department who are enjoying some of the best outcomes for students in the school whilst continuing to develop an exciting and engaging curriculum offer for our students. A key focus for the department is to build upon recent successes and as our new colleague, you will be working closely with a team who will support, develop and challenge you.

Both NQT’s and experienced teachers are welcome to apply – we will support you, develop you and above all welcome you into our aspirational school.

We are looking for a Teacher of History who:
• Is passionate about teaching and has a creative and flexible approach for all key stages.
• Will model best practice teaching and learning across the department and support the development of quality teaching in the department.
• Will support, challenge and engage a diverse cohort of students, enriching their learning experience, maximising their potential and raising attainment
What we offer:
• Access to our school and coastal specific CPD programmes which includes NQT, RQT and NPQML specific courses
• Access to the newly launched Chartered College of Teaching Hub – one of only 11 nationally
• Visible and supportive SLT so you can get on with teaching your subject to students who thrive within our climate for learning
• Tailored career pathways as you develop your teaching career with us.

We are proud to work alongside the eight other local secondary schools along the North Yorkshire coast and we believe this is a unique opportunity for a new colleague to grow, develop and thrive in their career as part of our coastal community. For more information on our Coastal Offer and how you can make a difference by teaching on the Yorkshire Coast please visit www.teachyc.co.uk

Dear applicant,

A warm welcome from all the staff, students and governors at Caedmon College and Whitby Sixth Form.

I was delighted to be appointed Headteacher in September 2018 and while every headteacher will say their school is special – but I truly believe Caedmon College Whitby is.

It is hard to encapsulate in words the full dynamism and vibrancy of our school. We are hugely proud of our students and privileged to serve them and this community. We see it as our professional and moral duty to prepare them as individuals to play their part as active citizens – rounded and centred and aware of all they might contribute to the world. In practical terms, this commitment is manifested in the lessons we deliver, the extra-curricular opportunities we offer and in the wider opportunities we promote.

In recent years enormous strides have been made to further increase learning standards. This hard work has seen results improve consistently and led to Ofsted rating our school as ‘Good’ in 2013 and in 2017. I truly believe we are a school with highly effective teachers producing outstanding outcomes for our students.

I hope you can see that this is an excellent time to join us at Caedmon. If successful you will join a teaching and support staff team of wonderful professionals who have ambition for our students and for themselves. We take pride in ensuring colleagues receive opportunities to develop their skills and experiences – and we have an enviable reputation for delivering high quality professional development.

I hope that you will take the time to come and see and experience for yourself the warm and welcoming atmosphere which makes our vision a reality.

Good luck with your application.

Simon Riley
