What skills and experience we're looking for

John Hanson is a successful, over-subscribed 11-16 community school, rated as Good by OFSTED. Our students are respectful, friendly and confident, and we strive to ensure that they achieve the success they deserve. We are a school where ‘Pupils work hard and find the work really challenging’. A school where ‘there are strong systems in place that support pupils in reaching the highest grades.’

Inspire - Care - Succeed is a key part of the school ethos, with Care being at the forefront for both staff and students.

We are seeking to appoint someone with excellent subject knowledge, who is able to respond positively and creatively to the expectations of the subject and has the ability to enthuse students. The history curriculum is designed to develop students who can “think and write” like historians. The GCSE syllabus is OCR B History, so subject knowledge in the Norman Conquest, Living in Nazi Germany, Making of the USA and Public Health in Britain would be desirable. The successful candidate must have good organization and communication skills and embrace school life.

What the school offers its staff

John Hanson Community School is a dynamic place where the potential of all members of our school community are valued.

The school offers:

  • An enthusiastic and driven team of teachers and support staff.
  • Trained Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA), Staff Well-Being Action Group (SWAGs) and Mental Health Leads.
  • Ongoing professional development of the highest standard for all staff including a Coaching system with the use of IRIS Connect, rather than formal observations and the use of BlueSky for Performance Management.
  • A fantastic working environment and membership to the Well-Being Hub for all.
  • A focus on Feedback, rather than time consuming and non-impactful marking.
  • Groups and systems to support staff at various stages of their life, including with pregnancy and maternity, menopause and with Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI).
  • An onsite gym with low cost membership for staff.
  • A Senior Leadership team that have an open-door policy.
  • Virtual Parents’ Evenings.

If you are an ECT, we have a successful ECT induction program and work closely with HISP teaching hub.

We welcome informal conversations with the Headteacher, and encourage you to come and visit our school to meet our staff and students. If you wish to do so, please contact Karen Page (karen.page@jhanson.hants.sch.uk) and Gina Davis (gina.davis@jhanson.hants.sch.uk) to arrange a date and time.
