History and Politics at Mascalls Academy: We have designed our history curriculum using the KS3 National Curriculum and it is delivered under the framework of the IB Middle Years programme. We have also referenced the KS2 Programmes of Study in our initial planning.

The History Department at Mascalls aims to immerse students in events of the past; to provide an understanding of local, national and global history which will enable them to understand their place in the world, and in the long story of human development. It aims to offer alternative perspectives to their own and to understand the personal histories of minority groups. They will gain a depth of knowledge as well as skills of enquiry and argument, through a curriculum which is designed to promote engagement, and prepare students for GCSE, A Level and future career progression.

The curriculum will encourage history students to engage with evidence and scholarship, and partake in debates that will drive and test new knowledge and their view of historical and contemporary events.

We currently also offer politics at A-Level and will be in our third year of delivery in September 2022. We believe that through the study of politics at Mascalls, our students will develop important democratic values that will allow them to scrutinise, question and evaluate the world around them. We provide students with a foundational understanding of key political terms and concepts, so that they may be able to explore and reflect upon their own thoughts and opinions in a more measured way. Students will study an array of ideological perspectives; through which they will begin to understand how mainstream political narratives of the day can shape the policies that dictate their everyday lives in the UK and abroad. The curriculum is designed to encourage students to be keen and critical observers of the news agenda, to partake in political debates with confidence, and to consider how they may play a role in solving some of the world's largest problems of the future.
