The Priory Academy LSST, one of the UK’s top performing state schools, is looking for a Teacher of History to join our exceptional staff body. You would join a team who are rightly proud of our Academy’s outstanding academic track record but prouder still of the vibrant, supportive and ambitious culture to which we all contribute and foster. The Academy, which also includes the Robert De Cheney Boarding House, sits in extensive grounds and has excellent facilities including a Sports Centre, a contemporary robotics lab and recently refurbished classrooms.
The successful candidate will benefit from numerous career development and network opportunities through LSST’s membership of The Priory Federation of Academies Trust, its role as a teaching school, a member of LTSA and the lead school for IOP. This allows for secondments, CPD, promotion and progression within the organisation and supports our strategy to retain and reward talent.
This role will challenge you, give you autonomy to teach and provide varied pathways to progression, whilst ensuring you are guided and supported throughout your career.More about the Department
The History Department currently has eight History specialists who have a great deal of combined experience in teaching across all Key Stages. Members of the department have a range of additional responsibilities in the school, and our ranks include a member of the Senior Leadership Team, a Head of Year, Enrichment Leader and the school's Gifted and Talented coordinator.
The curriculum the department currently offers is wide and varied. In Year 7 there are 2 lessons per week in which we teach the Medieval period, Tudors and Stuarts, and the Industrial Revolution. In Year 8, where we have 1 lesson per week, we teach the British Empire, Victorian Britain and the key events of the twentieth century. For GCSE - which students begin in Year 9 - we have opted to follow the AQA specification, teaching Britain: Health and the People, Norman England 1066-1100, Germany 1890-1945, and Conflict and Tension between East and West 1945-1972. The GCSE is taught during two hours per week in Year 9, and three in Years 10 and 11.
The department offers three A levels to the Sixth Form. History is an extremely popular choice. Again we offer the AQA specification and students study the Tudors: 1485-1603 and Russia: 1917-1953 as well as completing an NEA on the Arab-Israeli conflict. The department also offers Sociology as well as Politics. This of course means that members of staff have a breadth of opportunity to teach a range of interconnected disciplines within the department.
History is a very popular and well regarded department in the school and the successful candidate will need to be able to work collaboratively with a strong team of teachers who work exceptionally well with each other to deliver the best outcomes for our students. The ability to teach another A Level subject would be an advantage. Regardless of Year Group, the school promotes independent thinking and learning by pupils and students as a priority. In return the candidate will be given enormous scope within the school and department to explore exciting career pathways whilst receiving support and mentoring to complete the requirements of the NQT year if required.
