Teacher of Humanities job summary
Applications are welcomed from colleagues who wish to join our newly created Humanities Faculty. We are particularly keen to receive applications with a Religious Education, Ethics and Philosophy background as well those that can offer Geography.
One of the top schools in the East Midlands both by Progress8 score and the Times Parent Power Survey, Bourne Grammar School occupies an enviable position in the South of Lincolnshire, close to the urban centre of Peterborough but adjacent also to the beautiful landscape of Rutland and the town of Stamford. The student population reflects this, with an increasingly diverse make up of young people eager to learn and perform highly as a result of an outstanding quality of education.
Bourne Grammar’s mission is anchored in a desire to provide the “best atmosphere, best support and best results” possible for all students, an objective that runs through all of the school’s operational and strategic priorities. This produces young adults who are “well rounded, well qualified and well prepared”. An extensive trips, co-curricular and personal development programme is on offer to help ensure this which includes a Sixth Form Electives (enrichment) programme, and the quality of the school’s pastoral care is excellent. Kindness and inclusivity are core features of the school’s ethos.
At Bourne Grammar School the Humanities department comprises of EPR, Geography, History and Politics. The departments work collaboratively to help our students have a better understanding of the world around them. Each department in the humanities faculty are very popular with the students and have a high take up with GCSE and A-level. All subjects within the faculty aim to foster an approach that develops students’ curiosity about the past, present and future of the world and their role as global citizens. The faculty offers a diverse range of activities, both inside and outside the classroom across Key Stage Three, Four and Five. It is likely that successful candidates will be expected to teach in more than one Humanities area.
Religious Education is provided at Bourne Grammar School through three academic disciplines combined into a single subject called “EPR”: this stands for Ethics, Philosophy, and Religion. The subject has a substantial place in all the curricula of each Key Stage and is squarely focused on the study of religion and worldviews. EPR at Bourne Grammar School is a discrete subject distinct from other areas such as PSHE and Personal Development.
At the very heart of our work are the “Six-C’s”:
Comprehend: to know and understand the world of belief in which we live.
Communicate: to debate, read, and write effectively.
Consider: to listen to, and think deeply about, the beliefs of others and the reasons for them.
Care: to respect the differences between us but show concern for our shared humanity.
Critique: to see the strengths and weaknesses in the reasoning of others.
Conclude: to decide what we think and justify our opinions but have the confidence to say ‘I don’t know’.
All students in Key Stage Three have one lesson per week of EPR. The students study one Ethics, one Philosophy, and one Religion unit each year. All students in Key Stage Four have one lesson per fortnight, which is shared between statutory non-examined Religious Education and Personal Development. Our staff are only expected to deliver the Religious Education aspect of this programme, which takes up half the year and is then repeated with another class. All students in Key Stage Five receive their Statutory Religious Education via one termly lecture delivered by a member of the department. GCSE and A-Level Religious Studies are both offered, the courses run every year, and uptake is good. We follow the AQA Specification A course at GCSE: our chosen religions are Christianity and Islam whilst our themes are B, D, E, and F. Eduqas is our examining body at A-Level: our chosen religion is Buddhism which is taught alongside the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics papers. We have a strong track record of sending students to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities to study Philosophy, Religious Studies, or Theology. We have even trained two of our former students to become Religious Education teachers.
The department is a small, close-knit team of dedicated professionals and genuine subject enthusiasts. Teaching is done predominantly by subject specialists with degrees in either Religious Studies or Theology. Each member of staff has their own classroom in addition to a departmental office to work in during non-contact periods. The department boasts an impressive library containing all the primary and secondary texts one would need to teach the A-Level and GCSE courses well. Every lesson is planned and resourced in astonishing detail. Retention of staff within the department is excellent and some have been promoted internally to posts within the pastoral system. The Head of Department is very experienced having led the subject since 2009 and worked at the school since 2005. He was initially employed as a teacher of History and Religious Education so can support anyone called on to teach more than one humanities subject. The department has also played a significant role in the re-writing of the Lincolnshire Agreed Syllabus and works very closely with the County Religious Education Adviser.

We are an oversubscribed mixed selective school serving Bourne, Stamford and Peterborough. Our students are well-behaved and motivated and are taught in modern and well-resourced facilities. The school offers 240 places to students in Year 7 and, with a growing Sixth Form of over 500, has expanded to become one of the largest grammar schools in the country. The vast majority of Year 11 students transfer into our Sixth Form where students are offered a choice of 26 A-Level subjects.
The best atmosphere, the best support, the best results
This is our purpose statement - we have no long or complicated mission statement. The order of the purpose statement is deliberate; we believe that if we get the atmosphere and support right then, given our able students and committed staff, good results will follow. The atmosphere is special and cherished by us all and something that interview candidates often remark upon. We are a large and busy school and our students are well-behaved, motivated and want to be here and their parents/carers want them to be here. Most of the students, most of the time, want to learn and enjoy lessons which are well-taught and engaging.
The teaching staff body numbers around 100 teachers supported by 40 non-teaching colleagues. All teaching staff are subject specialists and are only required to teach their own subject. Staff absence is very low, as is staff turnover. Staff who do leave often do so for promoted posts. All teaching staff at Bourne Grammar School are issued with a laptop and other benefits including no breaktime, lunchtime or bus supervision duties and free on-site parking. Tea and coffee are freely available in our two large staffrooms.
