What skills and experience we're looking for
The Governors are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified graduate teacher of Italian to this selective school - four times judged OUTSTANDING by OFSTED and found to be outstanding in a Diocesan Inspection in December 2018.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant and thriving Modern Foreign Languages Department and will teach Italian to GCSE and A Level. MFL examination results are very good.
This post would ideally suit someone passionate about their subject and eager to teach to the highest level – teachers early on in their career are particularly welcome to apply. If part-time is preferred the requirement would be at least 0.5 contract.
What the school offers its staff
Students are highly motivated and intelligent. Behaviour is outstanding in this school which is committed to the ideals of Catholic education and enables its students to thrive and to fulfil their aspirations for the future.
The school provides a very rewarding working environment where employees are valued and there is a focus on staff welfare.
Further details about the role
The Modern Foreign Languages Department is a very successful department. We offer French, Spanish & Italian courses and have many students taking MFL in 6th Form. We also attract new students from other schools into Year 12 to study Languages.
There are 8 staff in the Department. There are TLR posts for Head of MFL, Teacher in Charge of Italian and Teacher in Charge of Spanish. We are well supported by MFL Assistants.
We have 3 language classrooms suitable for groups of 32 plus a Language Lab with 18 positions and a smaller Italian classroom suitable for GCSE/A Level classes.
French is compulsory in years 7, 8, 9. In Year 7 the students experience Italian and Spanish. This allows students to make an informed decision at the end of Year 7 as to their choice of 2nd language. Study of the second language continues through KS3. In Year 9 students make their language option choice for Year 10.
In KS4 all students study one MFL subject but may study two. We follow the AQA specification.
At KS5 students can continue with any of their GCSE languages. French and Spanish follow the AQA specification, whilst Italian follows Edexcel specification. Results in Italian are excellent 57% achieving A*.
KS3 – The Year 8 cross-curricular residential trip to Kent involves a day in Boulogne.
Key Stage 4 – We run a linguistic and cultural visit to Paris for Year 10.
The Spanish & Italian Exchanges are open to students in Year 11.
We provide European Work Experience for students in Year 12. Destinations include France, Belgium, Sweden and Spain.
