Teacher of Mandarin job summary

Inspire the next generation of leaders at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace

We are seeking an outstanding, qualified Teacher of Mandarin to work within our high performing academy. This position is open to both NQTs and more experienced teachers.

Your opportunity

The MFL team is a dynamic and innovative department under the leadership of the Head of MFL. We strive to ensure that the language learning experience for all of our students is creative, challenging and enjoyable and that students achieve and exceed their potential. Consequently, the department has seen successes at all Key Stages.

From September 2020, students in Year 7 will study two languages from a choice of French, Spanish and Mandarin. Year 8 – Year 11 will all study one language until the GCSE exams in Year 11. For students who want to take their language learning to the next level we offer French and Spanish at A-Level. High expectations are set within the department for both students and teachers alike. The MFL teachers at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace are committed to developing the way that they teach, taking on board new initiatives and experimenting with a wide range of teaching styles and strategies. Assessment for Learning is also considered to be of high importance and is a consistent part of each lesson.

The MFL department is a well-resourced curriculum area that makes outstanding use of interactive white-Boards, a range of on-line resources and a language lab. Students are encouraged to use the resources available to them to make choices as to how best they learn. At all key stages we strive to equip our students with the tools to become independent language learners. Independent learning tasks are planned to advance students’ understanding of topics studied.
Professional development of staff is promoted and supported. Performance Appraisal targets are set and training opportunities identified and all staff are involved in the Academy Improvement Planning and review process. The department benefits from the very latest teaching and learning strategies and innovations for literacy as well as ensuring that all teachers are expert practitioners in their field.

From Year 9 onwards MFL classes are set according to ability. Teaching is differentiated and personalised to meet the individual needs of all students. Equal emphasis is placed on each of the four skills of language learning (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and lessons are planned to incorporate cross curricular elements and opportunities to develop communication skills, thinking skills and creativity. Homework is integral to students’ success and books are marked to provide feedback to students and inform future planning. The language department aims not simply to teach a language but develop our students’ cultural understanding and to bring language learning to life. Therefore, we provide opportunities for our students to develop language skills outside of the classroom through trips, clubs and exchange opportunities.
