The Post

The successful applicant will ideally be able to teach KS3, 4 and 5. A level teaching is not essential.

This post is suitable for newly qualified teachers as well as more experienced teachers.

DGS Maths Department

The Maths Department is staffed by an enthusiastic and talented group of thirteen teaching staff, who are always keen to share ideas and resources. We are exceptionally collaborative and very well resourced, as a result of careful, strategic and iterative curriculum development over a number of years. We also have a highly skilled Core Teaching Assistant who is permanently based in the department and a highly skilled part-time Progress Mentor who delivers small group intervention sessions to students in Key Stage 3 and 4.

The department has a clear vision for Maths Mastery and our own Mastery Specialist through the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics, enabling us to be at the centre of both local and national developments in this key area.

The department is accommodated in specialist classrooms with interactive whiteboards. There is also a dedicated maths team room, which serves as both a very sociable staffroom and a well organised resource centre, where a wide variety of tasks and activities are kept.

Curriculum

We teach a mastery curriculum, to KS3 and 4. As well as a GCSE in Mathematics, one class each year completes an additional GCSE in Further Maths.

Maths is a very popular choice in the thriving Didcot Sixth Form and we offer both Maths and Further Maths. We have 156 students enrolled on a maths course with 3 maths groups in each of Year 12 and Year 13. Students are entered for Pearson A level maths at the end of Year 13. Further Maths students are entered for A level maths at the end of Year 12 and then study Further Maths in Year 13. They are also entered for Pearson A level and the optional units currently offered are Mechanics and Decision.

Outcomes

Our GCSE results have been consistently 20 to 30% above the national average for many years and students make exceptional progress. In 2024, 46% of A Level entries achieved A*-A, 66% achieved A*-B in Maths and 84% of entries achieved A*-C. We are very proud of these successes and attribute them to inspirational leadership and teaching, a growth mindset and lots of hard work!

Extra-Curricular Activities

Our students regularly participate in Maths Challenges and we seek out appropriate and engaging trips including visits to Oxford University, ‘Why Further Maths’ and Maths Inspiration lectures. Maths clubs and revision sessions are run for KS3 and 4 both at lunch time and after school and these are very well attended. Sixth Form students also run successful peer mentoring programmes in Maths
