What skills and experience we're looking for

The Maths Department is a well organised and highly successful team of 10 teachers, many of whom have different roles within the school. Pupils are taught in ability sets. Achievement and progress are regularly reviewed by the whole department to ensure individual pupils are placed in the correct group for their ability. There are 8 x 1 hour sessions per fortnight in all year groups.

The aims of the Department are to ensure that our curriculum caters for all levels of achievement, for pupils to enjoy their maths lessons, feel supported and cared for. We strive for every child to achieve their full potential. This means that every pupil will leave Hastings with a maths qualification they can be proud of. But not only this, pupils will be prepared for life.

Through our curriculum pupils will:

  • Be challenged and inspired
  • Apply their skills and knowledge to solve problems
  • Become independent learners
  • Be able to apply their skills and knowledge in other subjects
  • Develop skills that will help them in life
  • Be equipped with skills to be financially literate
  • Come to appreciate how maths is so important in the ‘real’ world

We pride ourselves on our pupils’ very high standards, which enable us to build on, generally excellent, Key Stage 2 results. Our GCSE results are significantly above the national average and amongst the best in the county. The progress made by all our pupils is very strong.

In 2024 our results were;

GCSE Grade 4+ 84%

GCSE Grade 5+ 62%

Progress +0.51

The Department is housed in 6 well-equipped specialist rooms in its own recently built block. We have access to a well-developed resources area, a newly refurbished library, Smart Boards, visualisers and ICT facilities. We use online homeworks and we have a wide range of Maths resources available to use. We are all proud to be a part of the Maths Department, and genuinely care about the pupils and each other.

We aim to provide the best experience for every child, building on Key Stage 2 skills and preparing pupils for beyond Hastings. We have very well-established links with our key local feeder schools.

The school was judged ‘Good’ at our last Ofsted inspection. We are committed to further improvement to ensure that we provide “Care and Excellence for All”.

The school has had significant investment in the last 12 months to build 8 new classrooms, a sports hall alongside redevelopment of the canteen and main pastoral areas. This will enable us to take extra pupils starting with a cohort of 200 in Year 7 in Autumn 2025.

We have a strong academic record with each of the previous 4 years having achieved a Progress 8 score “above average”, achieving a score of +0.40 last year. Our predictions for the future year groups are that they will exceed this. These continuing improvements are down to our focus on the basics; an orderly climate for learning, engaging teaching and building positive relationships with all stakeholders.

We have a comprehensive induction programme for new staff to help you settle in and provide very high levels of support. We are a school which strives to bring out the best in our staff by investing heavily in staff development and wellbeing.
