What the school offers its staff

At UCC we have a thriving maths department. This is a rare opportunity to join a successful and talented maths team who are supportive, collaborative and welcoming. Maths results at UCC are consistently above national averages for both attainment and progress and students benefit from a superb curriculum offer.

At Uppingham Community College the Mathematics curriculum across Key Stage 3 and 4 follows a mastery approach. Students become fluent with the fundamentals of Mathematics (for example, number bonds and rapid recall of times tables), we work to develop reasoning so that students can talk about what they are doing and why, and then transfer this understanding to problem-solving. As a result of knowing the fundamentals and being able to reason about them, students are able to apply these to new and unfamiliar contexts.

All students study a wide range of mathematical disciplines. We cover number skills work along with algebra, ratio and proportion, shape and space, and data handling. Students cover each discipline at the level appropriate to their prior learning. Students then make links between the disciplines and apply the skills taught in a variety of problem solving activities.

The maths department are based in a bespoke teaching facility that was built 10 years ago. Within this facility are 6 spacious classrooms, a small intervention room, a maths staff room and toilets for both students and staff.
