What skills and experience we're looking for
The successful candidate will be a strong and engaging practitioner, with a passion for the teaching of Maths. You will be able to demonstrate initiative in your role, as well as being flexible so as to meet changing needs of the students you support. You will be able to build effective relationships with both staff and students, and will be a positive role model for the students.
The Maths faculty is a supportive and collaborative team, who have high expectations for all students and actively encourage a love of numeracy. The faculty boasts a well sequenced and resourced curriculum and as a consequence we are ideally placed to support and develop early career teachers (ECTs), but would equally be suitable for experienced colleagues looking to broaden their experience and contribute to ensuring excellent outcomes across the faculty.
We would welcome applications from reflective practitioners with a sound knowledge and love of mathematics; individuals who will motivate, contextualise and inspire learning; individuals who can support and challenge students of all abilities at KS3 and KS4. Experience of teaching A-Level maths would be highly desirable and a good sense of humour essential.
What the school offers its staff
- A commitment to CPD and development of all staff, including collaborative support within the school and the Trust and 1:1 instructional coaching to allow teachers to thrive
- A clear curriculum vision and focus on evidence-based practice
- Commitment to inclusivity and fostering of diversity
- Values and vision that are lived not laminated
- Open and honest culture
- An established programme of support in place for Early Career Teachers which includes weekly 1:1 coaching from an assigned Lead Practitioner, support within Faculty areas, and access to a wider support network across the Trust.
Commitment to safeguarding
CSET is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Successful candidates are subject to child protection screening appropriate to the post, which will include an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the children’s workforce and a Children’s Barred List check.

Here at The Castle School, situated in the leafy suburbs of Thornbury, we are proud of our strong track record of academic achievement and pastoral care for our students. We are passionate about teaching and learning; our students’ experience of education has a long-lasting impact and prepares them for life beyond school.
At the heart of what we do is our vision to be an exceptional school at the heart of the community where every student has the curiosity, skills and confidence to make the world a better place.
We value kindness, fairness and aspiration and expect that our students and staff will work hard, will be kind and will be respectful to one another.
We’re proud of our vibrant, thriving Sixth Form that continues to demonstrate and sustain academic and vocational success. It is an exciting time to join The Castle School with current building developments taking place, ready for the Sixth Form centre to merge onto the main site. The new Sixth Form centre and facilities will be opening in September 2024 and will include the Business Studies and Economics classrooms.
Following our latest Ofsted inspection in November 2021, we remain a ‘Good’ school. The report said of the Headteacher and Senior Leaders: ‘together they have ensured high standards in pupils’ behaviour. They have gained the confidence of the staff.’
