Teacher of Maths job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher to join our vibrant and supportive maths department.
It is an exciting time to join the maths department. Already well established with high standards of teaching and learning in years 7 to 11, we have recently opened our brand new sixth form with our first year 12 pupils joining us in September 2024. We enjoy a close relationship with the Cambridgeshire Maths Hub, which is based here at Cambourne Village College.
Our pupils are courteous, eager to learn and engaged in our own trust-developed maths curriculum. A comprehensive bank of collaboratively planned lesson resources is available for all teachers to use and adapt for their own classes. We endeavour to support staff workload whilst also acknowledging that autonomy in the classroom is important for our teachers. All pupils, and all teaching staff, have their own iPads as part of an ongoing one-to-one iPad scheme.
We teach in attainment groups throughout years 7 to 11, and our scheme of work is tailored to suit the needs of the learners in each group. In addition to GCSE Maths, we have an established after-school GCSE Statistics option, and able mathematicians have the opportunity to study Level 2 Further Maths and Level 3 Additional Maths. In the sixth form, we offer A-level Maths and Level 3 Core Maths; we are looking forward to introducing A-level Further Maths too. Examination results for the maths department are excellent. In 2024 the GCSE maths progress 8 score was 0.54; pupils at Cambourne achieved over half a grade higher in GCSE maths, on average, when compared nationally with pupils with similar starting points.
We place a strong emphasis on providing opportunities for pupils to extend their learning in maths beyond the curriculum. Pupils participate in the UKMT individual and team maths challenges and other enrichment opportunities, such as the AMSP Maths Feasts. We run events for all learners, regardless of ability, to extend and further enrich their learning beyond the curriculum, for example a maths trip to Bletchley Park with Year 9 pupils.
The Maths Department team is highly supportive and has worked with ECTs and trainee teachers successfully over many years, providing experienced and dedicated mentoring. We are a partner school with the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge, to support PGCE students on placement at Cambourne Village College, and a partner school to CTSN SCITT providing placements for school direct trainee teachers.
We believe in supporting staff workload and as a department we subscribe to a number of different websites to support teaching and learning, including Sparx, Mathsbox, Mathspad and Integral Maths.
We are a friendly and sociable department; we have a dedicated maths department office which is well equipped and well used. The department is supported by specialist maths teaching assistants.
As a department, and as individuals, we believe in continual reflection on our practice. We have a strong track record of supporting and developing our teaching staff. Our programme includes:
Continuing support for those in their ECT years through a guaranteed place on the highly rated Developing Effective Teaching programme. This includes four days of specialist pedagogic support and observation opportunities.
ECTs also benefit from additional non-contact time that can be used for coaching, observation and co-planning with an identified mentor drawn from the experienced staff in the maths department.
For experienced teachers the trust appreciates the need for time out to reflect on what makes excellent practice. Teachers are offered a place on the Developing Outstanding Teaching programme which features four days looking at high-level skills and strategies for the classroom including a focus on how coaching and mentoring can develop other colleagues and lead change in the department.
Staff are all encouraged to either participate in, or lead on, one of the many excellent Maths Hub work groups which the Cambridge Maths Hub offers.
We have several members of the department who work part time and we would consider all requests to work flexibly.
Opportunities may be available to work more closely with the Cambridge Maths Hub, and we have several staff within the department who are currently seconded to the Hub for a portion of their week.
Many of our teachers have been supported to complete their Master’s in Education degree.
For staff interested in supporting new teachers, we offer access to the development opportunities offered through our teaching school alliance (camteach.org.uk), including opportunities to develop as an ITT or an ECT mentor.
Cambourne Village College is an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rated, over-subscribed secondary school, eight miles from Cambridge. We opened as part of the Cam Academy Trust in September 2013. Our ethos is aspirational and inclusive, our staff is highly motivated, our pupils courteous and hard-working, and we have excellent facilities. A 350 place sixth form opened in September 2024, and we have capacity for 175 students in each of Years 12 and 13. Joining Cambourne Village College represents a unique opportunity to work in a newly established school within a wider, high-quality Academy Trust that gives excellent possibilities for professional and career development.

Cambourne Village College, an academy of The Cam Academy Trust, opened in brand new premises in September 2013 with just five forms of Year 7 pupils. Serving one of the fastest-growing communities in the UK, we now have more than 1300 pupils on roll, with major further expansion planned, including the opening of our new sixth form centre in September 2024.
The College has enjoyed remarkable success since opening, gaining an early Ofsted Outstanding rating along with designation as a Leading Edge School. Our pupils achieve excellent results in public examinations via a curriculum designed to offer maximum breadth and opportunity for all abilities. Our extra-curricular offer is also outstanding: annual musical drama performances, termly concerts, a wide range of competitive and recreational sporting activities, and many further clubs and events are on offer. In 2019, we were granted the International School Award by the British Council and are looking forward to re-launching our programme of international visits and exchanges this year.
We strive to be a welcoming and inclusive school for our pupils and also to fulfil our Village College ethos in serving the whole community: we support an active adult education programme and more than 30 local groups and organisations make use of the school’s facilities, out of hours. This unusual commitment to our local community was a key factor in our winning a prestigious Silver Award in the ‘Making a Difference’ category of the Pearson School of the Year celebrations in 2018.
