What skills and experience we're looking for
We would like to appoint an outstanding Teacher of Maths.
Maths has 11 experienced specialist teachers who are passionate, enthusiastic and work collaboratively to ensure the highest standards of teaching and learning from year 7 all the way to year 13 and beyond. Teachers are consistently looking at ways to engage students in challenging lessons, which produce the best outcomes.
There are ten dedicated maths classrooms, which are fitted with interactive whiteboards as well as large dry wipe boards. The department is also well stocked with a large range of textbooks, online resources and learning activities.
Results in Maths are outstanding with students typically achieving 90% grade 7-9 and 99% achieving grade 5 or better. At GCSE some students, we also offer Additional Maths and Level 2 Further Maths. Results in these are also outstanding. A-Level numbers are high, including sets of Further Maths. Students regularly go on to study Maths or related subjects at university including many of the Russell Group Universities. Results at A ‘level are typically 80% A*-C at A-Level (95% A*-B in Further Maths). The department also offers Core Maths in the 6th Form, to those students who are looking to develop their mathematical and analytical skills for their chosen career path.
In addition to the academic curriculum, our students benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Every year around 500 students take part in the junior, intermediate and senior UKMT mathematics challenges, with several students qualifying for further rounds. We also have popular “house” maths team competitions in school and a thriving maths club.
The department is always looking at ways of developing its curriculum and widening the experience for students so expert subject knowledge and a passion to lead extra-curricular activities in Maths are highly desirable. We take great pride in providing our students with a first class education and instilling them with a love of learning.
Consideration will be given to both experienced teachers and ECTs who wish to develop their teaching expertise in an outstanding school.
For the Maths department at Heckmondwike, commitment, attitude, ideas, potential and enthusiasm are important qualities.

We are delighted to have been named “Secondary School Of The Year”, “Soaring 57 places in the UK rankings to 77” out of approx 6000 secondary schools (state and independent) in the latest Sunday Times Parent Power Guide.
And for the second year running we are ranked No 2 in the North of England.
This is a fabulous accolade to the whole school community and just reward for years of hard work from staff, students and indeed parents.
The survey includes both GCSE and A level results and is nationally noted as a true measure of school performance using metrics of most interest to parents when selecting a school.
“Such accolades are very pleasing and we are delighted to be recognised, but they only come about because of the week in week out hard work from students and staff and I salute my colleagues and students, they are an exceptional team.” Mr Roberts, Headteacher.
