Teacher of Maths job summary

DETAILS OF THE POST
This post becomes available from 1 September 2019 and offers excellent prospects for a committed and enthusiastic candidate to work within a successful and innovative Maths Department.

We are looking to appoint an outstanding teacher of Mathematics who is confident delivering the GCSE and A Level courses. Our students are academically able and well-motivated and achieve excellent results. The post would be equally suitable for an NQT or an experienced teacher and the opportunity to teach Further Maths could be available for a suitable candidate.

We are seeking a colleague who enjoys working in a team, can provide a stimulating atmosphere in the classroom and inspire our students. All teachers are expected to act as form tutors and to assist with the extra-curricular activities of the school and the teaching of associated subjects, e.g. Year 12 Enrichment, if required. Enthusiasm, patience and calmness under pressure are vital qualities. Please see the attached Person Specification for further details.

THE DEPARTMENT
Mathematics is an extremely popular subject with a very high uptake at A Level and many students go on to take Mathematics-related subjects at university. Each year some students are offered places at Oxford, Cambridge and the Russell Group Universities to read Mathematics or related subjects. As part of this increasing trend the department has started a timetabled lesson to help students’ problem solving for the STEP, MAT and TUMA examinations.

The department at present consists of nine teachers, some of whom are part-time. All are specialist Mathematicians and, other than the Head of Department, two hold TLRs for development in Mathematics. The department is characterised by its liveliness, enthusiasm and experience and there is a strong sense of teamwork. Staff are very proud of the results the pupils achieve at all three Key Stages. This is not to say there is any complacency for results can always be improved, and the department is always looking for new ways in which enrichment and intervention can be enhanced.

The Mathematics Department has its own suite of rooms and a dedicated staffroom in a new block which opened in September 2010. The facility is complemented by 30 laptops, linked to the school’s wireless network.

CURRICULUM
Key Stage 3
Students in Years 7 and 8 have five 1-hour lessons of Mathematics per fortnight. Students in Year 7 are taught in form groups and there is some streaming of Year 8. We complete KS3 in two years and students formally begin their GCSE course in Year 9. We use the CGP Foundation GCSE textbooks and the scheme of work covers mainly topics that form the basics of the GCSE course, extension work supplements the course using various resources including the alpha and Beta Oxford books.

Key Stage 4
In the Summer 2018 examinations (Edexcel certificate), 32% of students achieved a grade 8 and 9 with 50% achieving a grade 7 or above. 99% achieved a grade 4 or above.
Students in Years 9 to 11 are set by ability into 8 sets with an average class size of 24. In Years 9 and 10 students have 7 periods per fortnight for their GCSE course, increasing in Year 11 to 8 periods. We work from the Higher Maths textbook by Banks and Alcorn for Years 9 and 10 which is supplemented by a variety of other resources. In year 11 the CGP GCSE and IGCSE textbook is used and again supplemented by worksheets and other resources.

Key Stage 5
Students will sit the new linear A level examination (Edexcel) this Year for the first time.
In July 2018 results were again excellent: In A Level Mathematics, of the 41 candidates, 63% gained A*-A grades and 83% achieved A*-B grades. Students have 9 periods a fortnight in Year 12 and in Year 13, with 3 groups in Year 13 to keep class size to a minimum.
Students opt for Further Maths from the outset and are taught in a separate group for 18 periods over the fortnight for both Year 12 and 13. Results are excellent, last year 100% gained A*-A in A Level Further Maths.
Core Maths is now offered for students that are not studying Maths at A level with 2 groups studying for the AQA qualification, this is part of the sixth form enhancement programme.
There are at present 7 A Level Mathematics groups, including two Further Mathematics groups. There is opportunity for an experienced teacher to teach a good number of A Level classes, or for a teacher earlier in their career to develop their A Level teaching in a supportive environment.

EXTRA CURRICULAR
We are very proud of the Mathematics enrichment events we offer as a school. Students can participate in the UKMT Maths Challenges and we have a very large uptake for Junior, intermediate and Senior challenges. We also have a senior and junior team that are involved in the team challenges throughout the year.

Our Sixth Form Maths Prefects mentor Year 10 and 11 students that need support with their studies, help within the class and run mathematics workshop sessions for younger students.
