Teacher of Media Studies job summary

Working at Canons is a hugely rewarding experience. Warm relationships between students and staff, and within each of those communities, make it a place where people feel they are making a difference. Our commitment to research and professional learning means that colleagues routinely take on whole-school roles, achieve internal promotion and go on to even greater things when they, reluctantly, choose to leave.
We are a school that places huge stress on the belief that people want to get better and can get better. Professional autonomy and clear support systems, with recognition of success, are the norm. Workload and wellbeing are very much at the heart of our approach, and have been for many years. Self-motivated and self-evaluative individuals thrive within our community of learners. It is a place where you can discover or rediscover a love for teaching.
Close to the Jubilee Line and the M1, we are easily accessible from most areas in and around north London.
We are looking for a candidate who is ambitious for themselves and for others within our community. You should be confident in your subject knowledge and your abilities as a classroom practitioner, as well as being open to further development and progression that is research-informed and sustainable.
This is an ideal time to join the school. We are determined, more than ever, to show just how wonderful a community we are, meeting the challenges posed by our recent inspection report. There will be significant opportunities for the right candidate to make an impact and to achieve great things with us.
As well as being able to deliver effective Media lessons that ensure students make progress and achieve highly, we would particularly welcome candidates who have the ability to teach other subjects within our faculty of the Arts.
The Creative, Performance and Media Arts Faculty is comprised of Art, Drama, Media Studies, Photography and Dance, all of which are popular choices for students for both GCSE and A level. Students enjoy their time in the Creative Arts and we have high standards, both in our teaching and outcomes for students, and students achieve excellent results.
A big part of department is the extra-curricular programme. Each year we run a school musical which a large number of Creative Arts students are involved in. Previous musicals have included Little Shop of Horrors, Bugsy Malone and Fame. We also run Media, Drama, Art and Photography clubs and competitions.
Alongside the opportunities for students there are opportunities for teaching staff to develop their careers in an exciting and innovative department.
Exam Boards
• GCSE & A Level Drama – Edexcel
• GCSE Art & Photography – AQA
• GCSE & A Level Media – WJEC Eduqas
We look forward to welcoming new colleagues into the department to teach pupils across the full age and ability range present in the school, in order to ensure the highest possible standards of pupil achievement, personal development, and well-being, and with the ability to teach another subject in the Creative Arts Faculty (Music, Art, Photography or Drama) is desirable but not essential.

At the heart of a successful school is the provision of high quality teaching, the effective use of resources, improving standards of achievement for all students, and the promotion of students’ personal development and well-being. A subject teacher plays a key part in this provision by a commitment to the school’s ethos, by working effectively in subject and pastoral teams, and by delivering high standards of teaching and learning and personal care. In this way, s/he assists the school in reaching its targets and objectives.

Canons High School is a vibrant and dynamic multicultural school community in Edgware, NW London. Our school is renowned for being one in which people matter. Relationships are strong, opportunities for progression are many and the personal and professional development of adults and children is at the heart of what we do. Our most recent Ofsted inspection in January 2023 judged us to be good in all areas, noting that students “feel valued”, that our “curriculum is ambitious”, that staff “workload is reasonable” and senior leaders “are approachable and care”.

At Canons, we pride ourselves on the training and development of all our staff so that students are taught effectively and supported within and beyond the classroom to the highest levels. School leaders at all levels are well-equipped to use their professional judgment and a wide range of information to challenge and engage all students to achieve success, identify underachievement, act upon it and help students get back on track. We offer a well-balanced three year KS3 programme that enables students to enjoy success in their GCSE exams, which begin in Year 10.

Within the Math Faculty we teach all year groups in classes shaped by an element of setting, although there is some range of prior attainment within each group. Students are currently set, from KS3 onwards based on KS2 results, CATs scores and internal assessments. Student progress is monitored regularly through a variety of assessment. Students requiring additional support are identified from as early as year 7 and the correct level of intervention is put in place for individuals and small groups.

Pupils study a challenging syllabus and develop their independent learning skills. We encourage pupils to challenge themselves and become good problem solvers from when they first arrive in preparation for GCSE and eventually A-level study. At GCSE and A-level, the department currently prepares pupils for the Edexcel syllabus. A-level mathematics has always been a very popular option with two full classes in each of the Sixth Form year groups.
