What the school offers its staff
Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School was founded in 1701 in order to provide an education to young men who would go on to work at the famous Chatham Dockyard. More than 300 years later we still pride ourselves on providing a superb academic education alongside an unparalleled range of opportunities for personal growth and character development. Awarded ‘outstanding’ in our last Ofsted, the comment that stands out to us is, “students thrive within its distinctive ethos, enabling them to succeed academically and to develop into confident, well-rounded individuals who are prepared extremely well for their future lives.”
Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School is a selective boys grammar school with a coeducational sixth form. It is a seven form of entry school with over 1500 pupils. The school is significantly oversubscribed and has recently added an additional form of entry. The sixth form is also a highly successful and popular part of the school. The school has exceptional facilities and a distinctive ethos of providing outstanding academic teaching alongside a range of exceptional opportunities for all pupils.OFSTED awarded the school an outstanding grade in every category in our most recent inspection in March 2023 commenting that, ‘Pupils and students are thoughtful, polite, courteous and respectful’ and that ‘behaviour is exceptional’ They also stated ‘Staff morale is high, and turnover is low. Leaders are very conscious of staff well-being.’
In 2012 the School became one of the first 100 National Teaching Schools and in 2021 was successful in converting this into becoming one of the first 35 National Teaching School Hubs. Alongside our work as a National Support School, our position in Leigh Academies Trust and as the lead school in the Kent and Medway Maths Hub the school is in unrivalled position to offer superb support and training to any new member of staff, regardless of their role, or their experience.
