The Role

Job title: Teacher of MFL with the ability to teach a second subject

Reports to: Head of MFL

Start Date: September 2026

This is an excellent opportunity for an outstanding, ambitious and passionate Teacher of Spanish to join the team.

Overview

The Modern Languages Department at Bullers Wood School is large, very well resourced and extremely successful.

We are able to offer French and Spanish

Our department’s philosophy is very clear. We aim to promote the enjoyment of and proficiency in language learning. We want each student to achieve the highest possible standard in the languages studied and we try to create an interest in, and openness towards, other countries and cultures through organising many different links and events.

Facilities

Languages are taught in specialist rooms. The Sanderson building contains 9 teaching rooms and an ICT suite, offering 30 PCs with extensive subject specific software. There are interactive whiteboards or screens in all teaching rooms which are very actively used.

Staff

All staff within the Department teach at least two languages specialising in one at KS5. It is the policy of the Department that all staff teach across the age and ability range.

In order to develop fully the potential of all members of staff, the Department meets regularly for in-service training sessions to keep in contact with new developments and, more importantly, to share ideas and best practice. Staff are also able to attend INSET organised by external providers where this benefit both the individual and the Faculty.

Key Stages 3 & 4

All students study two languages during Year 7 and 8 (Spanish and French) except a very small number of students who receive extra support with literacy. Most students continue their study of at least one language to GCSE following Edexcel specification. Students achieve fantastic GCSE results which are always well above the national average. In 2024 students achieved the following results:

French, 74% grades 9-4 and 37% grades 9-7.

Ofsted report

This post is available in September 2023 and offers an exciting opportunity to join an enthusiastic staff and very supportive department whose members are committed to making a real difference. The school was last fully inspected by Ofsted in May 2011 and we were awarded Outstanding. The report is available on our website. We are very proud of our achievements and prior to the pandemic had regularly been congratulated by the Minister of State for Schools on our achievements at GCSE level placing us in the top 100 non-selective state-funded schools in England. In addition, we were in the top 100 for students achieving the English Baccalaureate. We have also regularly been in the top 10% nationally (out of over 2,500 schools and colleges) for our A level performance assessed by ALPS.

We are looking for a passionate individual to help us to ensure that in every way Bullers Wood remains an excellent school and that every one of our students flourishes, achieves and exceeds expectations.

The successful candidate will join Bullers Wood at an exciting time as September 2018 saw the opening of a new secondary free school, Bullers Wood School for Boys, who have now moved into their brand-new permanent building. Our two schools led to the establishment of the Bullers Wood Multi Academy Trust, giving opportunities for enhanced professional and career development for colleagues working within the Trust. The successful candidate may be required to work at either school.
