Teacher of PE & Geography job summary
BELIEVE IN TRADITIONAL VALUES AND ACADEMIC RIGOUR? Want a Senior Leadership Team who visibly support staff? Want to teach pupils who behave impeccably at all times?
Then you should be interested in teaching at Bedford Free School. We are recruiting an English teacher.
RESPECT, HONESTY, HIGH EXPECTATIONS
At BFS our values drive everything that we do and as a result our teachers enjoy impeccable behaviour in lessons and hardworking, highly motivated pupils. BFS is a genuinely comprehensive school that provides a knowledge-based education for pupils of all backgrounds. We teach an unashamedly academic curriculum consisting of the best that has been thought and said and English is at the heart of this.
PARENTAL CHOICE
With waiting lists in each year group and 2019 GCSE results placing us amongst the top schools in the country for progress, we are a hugely popular school. Demand for places is very high as parents want the combination of a BFS education and our distinctive small school feel for their children.
THE DEPARTMENT
We have a knowledge-based curriculum. It is is written in advance (mainly in a ‘mastery booklet’ format) by all members of the English Department and directed by the Head of Department and Second in Department. The vast majority of the planning is now ready for teaching and saves teachers a great deal of planning on a day to day basis. You will be led by excellent leaders and you will be working with a team of subject-specialists.
The department is housed in 5 dedicated classrooms, each equipped with interactive ‘Promethean’ boards. English teachers have a maximum of 5 teaching groups. In addition to their own classrooms, teachers have access to a departmental office which provides a quiet working space. The close-knit team meet on a weekly basis.
Results in English are outstanding.

We have no unwieldy marking policies; our pupils’ behaviour is impeccable supported by same-day whole-school sanctions where necessary and Senior Leaders have a very high profile to ensure that you are supported to develop.

Set up in 2012 by local teachers and parents, Bedford Free School exists to offer families a choice in Bedford.
Bedford Free School is a unique school with a fantastic educational offer. We really do believe that our pupils can go on to achieve extraordinary things. In our young history, we have proved they can and we are now one of the highest performing secondary schools not only in the area, but in the country.
BFS is a small school of only around 500 pupils, so staff get to know each pupil as an individual and we have a family feel. This allows us to encourage, demand and collectively strive for academic and personal success.
We believe that all pupils deserve a ‘grammar-school’ style education, with access to an academic curriculum, strong discipline, high expectations and access to highly selective universities, and a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
