What skills and experience we're looking for

The Performing Arts Department caters for a wide range of student abilities and interests. Student outcomes are excellent and a large portion of alumni go on to train and work in the industry. The department is inclusive and aims to develop students’ understanding of performance at level 3 in a way that allows for progression to professional training as well as the development of transferable skills for future study and work in a range of other fields.

This new position is for a teacher of BTEC Acting with a possible progression into BTEC Dance and/or BTEC Musical Theatre in the future. BTEC Acting is a relatively new course and is proving popular with a wide range of students. We follow the Pearson Level 3 Extended Certificate in Performing Arts, with an emphasis on acting skills for the internally assessed units.

The department is well-resourced with a range of experienced subject-specialist teachers and two members of support staff already in post. The department offers a supportive environment where sharing best practice is encouraged. Teaching takes place in the college theatre with industry-level sound and lighting equipment as well as the new Dance studio. The department is also well-resourced for costuming, set and props.

We are seeking to appoint a newly qualified or experienced teacher to teach two groups of BTEC Acting. The successful applicant would ideally also be able to teach Musical Theatre or Dance in the future. You should have a relevant degree in performing arts and qualified teacher status. Applicants will be able to teach students naturalistic acting techniques, specifically the methods of Konstantin Stanislavski, as well as one other acting style such as Commedia Dell’Arte or the physical theatre style of Steven Berkoff. You will be able to structure learning so that students with a range of prior experience effectively develop study, performance and writing skills. Adaptive teaching will be at the heart of your practice. You will be organised, able to plan and deliver a course independently as well as someone who seeks support and further training when needed. You should be flexible in your approach so that the needs of students and the aims of the college are at the front of your thinking. Applicants will also work as part of the wider team, including working as an internal verifier for other BTEC courses. Applicants who are also able to teach another subject such as Media or English are welcome and a full-time position may then be possible.
