Teacher of Science job summary

We are recruiting for a Science Teacher to join our highly successful team and help drive the expansion of the subject across the school. We are looking for a committed practitioner to join our growing team, to promote the values of learning the sciences and inspire a love of all three disciplines in Key Stage 3, before guiding students through the separate and combined elements of the GCSE specifications. The department has a strong focus on curriculum development and the successful candidate will form part of a team that is continually evolving in terms of resources, classroom practice and pedagogy.

The Malling School is an extremely positive, happy and caring place for young people to learn. We are a small stand-alone foundation school and are very proud of our wonderful students and talented staff. We are fully committed to continually developing our teaching at The Malling School. We have no formal lesson observations and a strong open culture of improving our teaching together through regular low stakes developmental learning walks.

Our strategy to improve outcomes for our students is not through short term unsustainable Y11 intervention but through developing our curriculum together and continually reflecting and improving our daily practice in every classroom for every year group.

We have a very strong behaviour for learning policy. Low-level disruption is not tolerated allowing teachers to do what we do best, teach. All staff receive regular informal behaviour for learning training to ensure we are consistent in our application of the policy. Students are very clear around our high expectations of behaviour and attitude in every classroom. The key to the success of the policy is the proactive targeting of poor work ethic and low-level disruption by every teacher. Students that negatively impact learning are transferred out of the lesson and collected by our senior leaders. Centralised detentions are run by the pastoral team so that the school behaviour policy does not add to teacher workload.

The leadership team ensures that all our improvement strategies are clearly communicated to staff, effectively piloted, evaluated and well thought through. Our key principle when introducing any new initiative is to ensure that there is no unnecessary workload and that it has a high impact on student progress

What we can offer you:
  • Opportunity to teach at all key stages, for the right candidate.
  • Robust behaviour systems
  • No formal observations – instead Developmental Learning Walks with ongoing feedback, helping you to continuously develop as a teacher
  • CPD starts as soon as you are appointed
  • A new building with great facilities and a very pleasant location in Kent, including our own lake

The successful candidate will be:

  • An excellent and innovative Teacher of Science, with excellent subject knowledge
  • Someone who does whatever it takes to ensure that every pupil has the best chance to achieve their potential
  • ICT literate and proactively uses ICT to enhance their teaching • An excellent team player with the ability to work under pressure
  • A qualified teacher (we welcome applications from unqualified teachers, who are keen to become a qualified teacher, but as a Foundation School we have an obligation to appoint a qualified teacher wherever possible)

It is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious teacher, keen to join an expanding school. We welcome visits and would be delighted to show you around our School to fully appreciate our excellent learning environment. Please apply via the DfE. For more information or to arrange an informal visit please contact the HR Department at hr@themallingschool.kent.sch.uk

Closing date: 2nd September 2022
