Job Description

The Teacher of Science is an exciting addition to the Gloucester academy team. The science department at Gloucester Academy consists of five full time teachers, 1 part time teacher, technicians and an HLTA assigned specifically to Science. The team embodies our ethos, they ensure that teaching and learning practices are research led, they provide engaging content through explicit instruction, and ensure that the most recent research on cognitive science is at the forefront of their teaching practices. We have a super lab around which are situated a number of classrooms that mainly are used by one teacher. A science technician supports the lab and ensures that everything is well maintained and ready for use.

Resources:

In each classroom there is a visualiser which the Science team uses during the input part of every lesson. Each student has their own mini whiteboard enabling teachers to assess their class with ease.

We use Sparx Science in Year 10/11 which is set weekly through an automated online system. Year 7-11 have knowledge organiser homework to memorise key terms and be able to apply in lessons. The tasks are centred around retrieval practice.

Each lesson has been designed with a retrieval segment to start the lesson, the main body of the lesson focuses on I Do, We Do, You Do, with students completing at least 20 minutes of silent independent work to master their learning. Lessons end with review questions to make the most of every minute.

Curriculum:

Students are examined through AQA Combined Science: Trilogy, and our Schemes of Learning allow for a seamless transition between KS3 and KS4, with topics mapped out from one year to the next. Our curriculum is collaboratively planned by the department to seamlessly progress from Primary School and build to studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Assessments are completed during the school assessment windows, with time built into the schemes of learning for students to work on their individual gaps of knowledge. All Year 11s attend a weekly period 6 on Wednesdays, this time is used for exam practice and to support students with essential exam topics.

The duties and responsibilities in this job description are not restrictive and the post holder may be required to undertake any other duties that may be required from time to time. Any such duties should not however substantially change the general character of the post.

Job Purpose:

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

  • To work with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to promote inclusion, and equality of opportunity for both students and staff.
  • To share in the corporate responsibility for, and commitment to the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being and discipline of all students.
  • To progress the education and welfare of designated groups of students in accordance with the prevailing School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, having due regards to the requirements of the National Curriculum, the aims, objectives and schemes of work of the Academy/Learning Area, Year Cohort, and any policies of the Academy Trust.
  • To impact on the educational progress beyond one’s own assigned students.
  • To Lead, develop and enhance the teaching practice of others including participation in Performance Management/appraisal arrangements.
  • To contribute to curriculum planning and delivery as applicable.
  • To monitor teaching and learning as part of the Academy’s self-evaluation process (to include lesson observation).
  • Making available full, up-to-date schemes of work, for the subject within the Learning Area, for use internally and externally as required.
  • Advising on appropriate classroom management.
  • Advising regarding allocation of students to teaching groups within the Learning Area/Year following appropriate consultations.
  • Advising regarding allocation of staffing for timetabling purposes.
  • Controlling expenditure allowances and fulfilling the Academy’s budgeting expectations.
  • The usage, storage and security of all facilities and resources.
  • Ensuring the maintenance of relevant inventories according to Academy policies.
