Teacher of Science job summary
If your application is successful, you will be joining an enthusiastic and experienced team who have consistently made a very strong contribution towards the academic success of the school. Although we are proud of our good exam results, we are also committed to inspiring our pupils and to cultivating an excitement and enthusiasm for Science so that pupils enjoy lessons and choose to continue to study the subject post-16 and beyond.
As a department, we work closely together offering support and sharing of ideas and resources. A new teacher joining the department will receive strong and regular support as well as helpful professional development. Within the school, there are also additional training sessions for Early Careers Teachers to develop their awareness of whole-school issues and approach to teaching and learning.
Rooms and Resources
We have five Science laboratories which are grouped together in a separate annexe to the main school building. Two of the labs have Interactive touch-TVs and the remaining have projectors and whiteboards. All labs are fitted with gas taps, electric plug sockets and sinks for pupils use during practical lessons, with two of the laboratories containing fume cupboards.
Amongst the five Science laboratories is our preparation room which is well stocked with a range of resources for the teaching of KS3 and KS4 lessons. The preparation room also serves as our Science ‘staff room’.
In addition to the prep room, there is a marking room for the exclusive use of Science staff.
As a department we share and contribute to good resources which are kept on a Science computer network for access by all Science staff
The Curriculum
Currently at Key Stage Three, pupils follow a curriculum adapted from the Nelson Thornes ’Fusion’ scheme of work, a programme of study that promotes the development key skills.
At Key Stage Four, most pupils follow, and are entered for, the AQA Combined Science (Trilogy) GCSE. Currently there are two sets (both a Higher and Foundation group) entered for the AQA Triple Science GCSEs.
