Teacher of SEN job summary

We are looking to appoint an exceptional SEN teacher who will teach the students in our ARP and support their integration into the mainstream school.

These are exciting times at Harris Academy Rainham. Since joining the Harris Federation in September 2016 our school has gone from strength to strength. We are an Ofsted rated good school and a member of the Leading Edge Partnership of high performing schools with the SSAT. As a result of our success, we are due to open a sixth from provision in September 2023 and an additional resource provision (ARP) for students with ASD in September 2022.

We are looking for an outstanding teacher who is fully committed to the support and development of students with SEND. It is essential that the successful candidate has a willingness to ‘think outside the box’ working dynamically, creatively and collaboratively with the SENCO and Deputy SENCo to ensure that the educational experience and outcomes for these students is exceptional. This post would suit a candidate with either primary or secondary school experience.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

A track record of exceptional SEN teaching and experience
Capable of differentiating / scaffolding work across the Key Stages (this could be either at primary or secondary)
Broad curriculum knowledge
Core Purpose

To be an outstanding Specialist SEN Teacher whose focus is on the best possible education of our students
To be responsible for the day to day oversight and implementation of the student’s EHCP, ensuring appropriate bespoke provision is planned and implemented.
To liaise with parents, schools staff and external agencies as appropriate.
To actively support and promote the school’s vision and values.
To raise standards of student attainment and achievement in his/her classes and to monitor and support student progress in his/her classes.
To demonstrate excellent subject knowledge, engaging and supporting learners in academic opportunities.
To be accountable for the safety, wellbeing, development, academic progress and attainment of each student in his/her classes.
To accompany the students to tutor time.

Main Areas of Responsibility
Monitoring, Evaluation and Planning

To attend faculty meetings or training as published in the school calendar with a clear focus on quality of teaching and learning, raising attainment, monitoring, evaluation and strategic planning.
To ensure the effective implementation of all school policies.
To support the SENCo/ Deputy SENCo in analysis of student progress.
Curriculum

To ensure the provision of an appropriate bespoke, balanced and differentiated curriculum for the students in accordance with their individual EHCP.
To ensure that the spiritual, moral, social and cultural aspects of the curriculum are well covered.
To ensure that all statutory requirements within the EHCP are met.
To promote a positive approach to learning and inclusion.
To contribute ideas to the SENCo / Deputy SENCo about the formulation of aims, objectives and strategic plans for the student.
Assessment

To ensure the implementation of the school’s Teaching and Learning Policy and Homework Policy in his/her classes, with particular regard to Assessment for Learning as appropriate to each EHCP.
To develop appropriate schemes of work in line with each EHCP.
To ensure effective reporting of student progress to parents/carers and to convene meetings with parents/carers outside of parents’ evening when necessary.
To contribute to the student’s Annual Review process.
Discipline

To be responsible for behaviour management/appropriate strategies for the students, contacting parents/carers as appropriate.
To uphold and implement the school’s Behaviour for Excellence policy.
To create a positive learning environment in all classes.
Professional Development

To keep abreast of developments, including research and development in the area of effective teaching and learning.
To promote teamwork to ensure effective working relationships and act as a positive role model.
Additional Responsibilities

To actively participate in, and support the development of, the extra-curricular and/or enrichment activities across the whole school as appropriate, e.g. support student at an after school club.
To be responsible for the implementation of all school policies and for the safety and well-being of students in their classes.
To actively participate in the school’s programme for PSHE delivery and conduct appropriate lessons tailored to each student and their EHCP.
Qualifications & Experience
The successful candidate will:

Hold QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree
Have successful teaching experience at secondary level (can be teaching practice), ideally including experience in multi-ethnic urban schools and of working in an 11-18 school
Understand the theory and practice of effective teaching and learning
Understand the importance of high expectations and equality of access for all students, and of being a tutor
Have knowledge of National Curriculum requirements at KS3 and KS4, and of writing lesson plans, developing resources and assessing students' work
Be able to work as part of a team and to develop and maintain positive relationships with all staff
Have a good level of ICT skills, ideally including innovative use of interactive white boards
Be able to create a motivating and safe learning environment for all students
Be able to communicate positively with parents, carers and other external agencies where necessary
Have good written and spoken communication skills
Be able to lead and manage their own work effectively
Have excellent time management skills
Be able to motivate students and raise their aspirations through a range of strategies
