Teacher of Social Sciences job summary

An exciting opportunity has become available to teach Social Sciences in a vibrant and improving setting at this “Outstanding” Catholic School (Section 48 Inspection Oct 2017). Are you a dynamic and enthusiastic teacher of Psychology/Sociology? If so, we are we are looking to employ an excellent Social Science teacher who can inspire students to the highest of standards.

St Wilfrid’s is growing in size, from 5 forms of entry (FE) to 6. In September 2021 we introduced Psychology into the GCSE curriculum. GCSE Psychology already has 2 classes in Year 10 and we are hopeful that its popularity will grow as it becomes further embedded.

We really do value our teachers and actively support their professional development. For ECTs, we offer an in-depth programme of support and training based on the Early Careers Framework. We currently have 7 ECTs in their first year of teaching and have already employed 6 for September; this is a place where ECTs thrive! We really do value our teachers and actively support their professional development. You do not need to be a Catholic to work here, indeed many of our staff are not, but a willingness to embrace the ethos of the school is expected.

The strength of community at St Wilfrid’s is a strong one based upon mutual respect. The staff work incredibly hard and are prepared to go the extra mile for the students in their charge. Our students are amazing and they contribute enormously to making the school such a welcoming and productive place. Our most recent Section 48 Diocesan Report (October 2017) and our Ofsted Report (January 2018) certainly reinforce this aspect of school life. All potential applicants are invited and encouraged to arrange a visit – we firmly believe you won’t be disappointed!

Application by form downloadable from our website https://www.stwilfrids.com/ApplicationForms to include a maximum of 2 pages of supporting statement contained within the form.

St Wilfrid’s has an extremely strong reputation in the community and as such, we are heavily oversubscribed with waiting lists in all year groups. Previously, we were a 5-form entry Catholic School but we are increasing in size to 6 forms of entry and as such, from September 2022, we will have 180 students in each Year in KS3, with 150 in each year at KS 4. Our VI Form is incredibly popular and continues to grow in size. This is a great measure of our success.

The students love their school and staff love working here. In our most recent Section 48 inspection, where we were rated “Outstanding”, the inspectors commented, “in every interview the word “community” was one of the defining characteristics of St Wilfrid’s”. In December 2021 a Diocesan monitoring visit reinforced these high standards.

The quotes below are from staff members who have recently joined us:

“As soon as I arrived for my interview, I knew that St Wilfrid’s was a special place and that I really wanted to work here. The staff have been so welcoming and supportive since I joined in what have been extraordinary circumstances this year and the students are incredible – it is a caring and respectful school community. The ethos is evident in all areas of the school from assemblies led by an inspirational senior leadership team right down to the way students treat each other in the playground, it really is a wonderful school and I am so glad to be a part of it.” Miss L Cearns (Subject Leader for Drama)

“You only need to walk around the school to see what a vibrant place St Wilfrid’s is to be. The sense of community and passion they have for developing both students and staff across all subjects is second to none. Having joined the school during the toughest year for everyone, I still went home every day knowing there wasn’t any other school I would rather call my place of work. I hope you've already downloaded the application form!” Miss K Towson (Dance)

“I am currently in my third-year teaching at St Wilfrid’s. Throughout my time at this school I have been extremely happy and have felt a valued part of the strong community. I have been supported by other members of the team who have always been there to provide advice if needed.

The quotes below are from staff members who have recently joined us:The ethos of the school is compassionate and warm and the staff at St Wilfrid’s are an incredibly fantastic team to work alongside. St Wilfrid's is strongly committed to the happiness and well-being of their lovely students as well as their staff. Over these years I have been given a wide range of opportunities for progression and have been supported throughout these new ventures during my career progression. The school is a wonderful school to work for, I am very blessed to be here!” Mrs H Lay (Social Sciences)

Students at St Wilfrid’s make “above average” progress overall and our reputation for this is countywide. We are determined to do even better.
