What skills and experience we're looking for
A subject specialism in one or more of the core subjects would be beneficial, although Teachers of the Deaf with other skill sets and experience, including primary, are encouraged to apply.
A minimum of BSL Level 2 (or equivalent native use) is required, with higher levels of BSL being desirable. The successful candidate will receive a comprehensive training and induction package to support them in the role and further develop their professional expertise.
We are
looking for teachers who bring enthusiasm and innovation to the role and will
enjoy working in a collaborative way to develop a leading service with excellent
practice and high-quality outcomes for the CYP who are admitted to Corner
House. They will be required to create
schemes of work and deliver lessons for children and young people with complex
needs, supporting subject specialist teachers to devise and adapt their
lessons, and supporting young d/Deaf people in the main classroom. In addition to the role, they will work with
a range of external and hospital-based professionals to build an effective
support model for the students during their admission and post-discharge. They will also be part of the wider hospital
and community teaching team and will work with colleagues and young people from
across the service. All our teachers and HLTA’s have the opportunity to teach
across the hospital sectors.
What the school offers its staff
The
Wandsworth Hospital and Home Tuition Service (HHTS) has an exciting opportunity
for two Teachers of the Deaf to join our creative, supportive, and enthusiastic
team of hospital schoolteachers across St George’s Hospital and Springfield

House ward, the highly specialist inpatient provision for Deaf children and
young people, alongside our other Teachers of the Deaf and specialist HLTA’s.
HHTS is a Hospital School and Medical Pupil Referral Unit that provides education for a diverse range of students aged 5-18 who are experiencing a severe or chronic illness and/or have mental health issues.
HHTS encompasses St. George’s Hospital, CAMHS School at Springfield Hospital (incorporating Aquarius, Wisteria and Corner House wards), a range of Community Education programmes and Mental Health Outreach. Within Corner House ward, the National Deaf CAMHS inpatient unit, where we provide small group teaching to the Deaf learners in our care across the age ranges over two well designed classrooms.
Our students have the opportunity to make accelerated progress through personalised learning programmes delivered in small groups or in one-to-one tuition. Staff and students build positive nurturing relationships, which enable students to grow in confidence, self-acceptance and compassion for all.
The school was graded 'Outstanding' once again in the 2018/2019 inspection and is situated a short walking distance from Tooting Bec Underground station with excellent transport links.
