Purpose:

  • To take responsibility for a tutor group to which you may teach a range of Foundation subjects.
  • To deliver high quality teaching of the Maths curriculum, up to GCSE level, to pupils with a range of SEND including vision impairment.
  • Support pupils to access the curriculum, participate in learning, experience a sense of achievement and develop independence.

Responsibilities:

Overall Effectiveness

  • Create a positive learning environment as set out in the school’s ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning Manifesto’.
  • Promote the independence and achievement of all children and young people.
  • Lead a class team to provide outstanding teaching and learning for all.
  • Work in partnership with parents, colleagues and other professionals to achieve the best possible outcomes for children and young people.
  • Provide support for children and young people in all aspects of the Additional Curriculum for pupils with a Vision Impairment.

Teaching and Learning

  • Provide high quality teaching for pupils in Maths from Entry Level to GCSE.
  • Provide engaging and targeted teaching in a range of foundation subjects to a form tutor group.
  • Plan, prepare and implement learning activities so that children and young people enjoy learning, achieve their full potential and experience a sense of wellbeing.
  • Deliver teaching to address challenging learning objectives, appropriately differentiated to meet the needs of all children and young people in the class.
  • Work with the Reprographics Department to adapt and prepare resources in advance, as necessary, so that pupils are able to fully access teaching materials in large or modified print or Braille.
  • Develop skills in the use of specialist formats as appropriate e.g. Braille.
  • Use concrete resources and unifying experiences as well as a rich verbal dialogue to teach new concepts.
  • Promote independence within personal organisation skills and build time into lessons to support this.
  • Model appropriate social interactions including those which do not rely on facial expressions, body language or other non-verbal cues for pupils with a severe sight impairment.
  • Support the use of ICT and optical aids in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in their use.
  • Establish and maintain an orderly learning environment.
  • Support children and young people to experience positive wellbeing by creating a supportive ethos within the class.
  • Establish productive working relationships with children and young people, acting as a role model and setting high expectations.
  • Support and oversee inclusion for children and young people through experiences in other schools, colleges and work experience schemes where appropriate.
  • Plan and lead educational visits, including residential visits, as appropriate to the needs and interests of the children and young people in the class.

Assessment, Target Setting and Recording Progress

  • Provide feedback to children and young people in relation to progress and achievement and support them, where they can, to assess their own learning.
  • Maintain objective and accurate records and reports on achievement, progress and other matters, collating appropriate evidence and entering data into the school systems.
  • Prepare for Person Centred Reviews of Education, Health and Care Plans and contribute to them so that achievements are celebrated and any necessary amendments to outcomes and provision are made.

Partnership Working

  • Support the role of parents in learning by sharing information with them in meetings or through written communication and by taking account of their views in planning and teaching.
  • Liaise with other professionals to design and/or implement learning or therapy programmes for individuals where appropriate.
  • Make referrals to other professionals where appropriate, in discussion with the Vice Principal.

Personal Development and School Improvement

  • Represent the school at external meetings as requested by the Vice Principal.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos, aims and work of the School.
  • Be aware of and comply with the School’s policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting concerns to an appropriate person.
  • Seek to establish and maintain good relationships with all pupils, parents/carers/colleagues and other professionals.
  • Be a role model for pupils in terms of one’s own dress, language, time keeping and personal demeanour, in line with the staff handbook.
  • Take an active part in training and other development opportunities and apply what is learnt to improve teaching and learning.
  • Develop own skills in the use of specialist equipment used including software applications.
  • Participate in the Trust’s Appraisal process.
  • Take responsibility for Maths across the school; co-ordinating resources, identifying training opportunities or planning enrichment activities.
  • Contribute to focus groups and other means of reviewing and improving the curriculum.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings.
