Teaching Assistant (Pupil Support Aassistant) job summary
1. 1. To support teaching staff in the development and education of pupils, including the provision of specialist skills as appropriate, particularly to support pupils with special educational needs.
2. 2. To complement the work of all staff in addressing the needs of the pupils who require help to overcome barriers to learning over the lunchtime period (including behaviour, active play, social-interaction as well as developing the skills of teamwork and co-operation).
3. 3. Follow and actively promote the school’s vision and values.
4. 4. Follow the Trust and school’s policies and procedures including those for safeguarding, health and safety and care of pupils.
5. 5. To play an active part in supporting pupils with special educational needs.
6. To ensure the supervision, security and safeguarding and good conduct of pupils at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assist with the preparation, teaching and organisation of activities across the curriculum for pupils within or outside the classroom, taking responsibility for various aspects of teaching and learning and contributing directly to the raising of standards.
2. Work with named pupils without direct supervision.
3. Assist with the preparation, teaching and organisation of activities across the curriculum for pupils during offsite educational visits.
4. Assist with the assessment (including marking), monitoring and display of work, materials and equipment.
5. Respond to pupils’ individual needs whether academic, personal, social or emotional.
6. Give specific support to pupils with SEN, liaising with the class teacher and SENCO and contributing to IEPs and reviews. Support pupils with SEN in an ‘enhanced provision’ area.
7. Support generally or specifically, pupils with EAL by giving them opportunities to develop skills in English through day-to-day activities and to use their home or community language as appropriate.
8. Deliver specific interventions and assess pupils, keep appropriate records, monitor progress and report to class teachers and other relevant staff.
9. Be familiar with the national curriculum and/or the foundation stage, as appropriate, and the school’s schemes of work for other subjects.
10. Take part in training opportunities.
11. To provide activities, lead on and support pupils with additional needs through a child-centered approach including non-class based learning.
12. Work with a specific group of pupils, within the appraisal system, and promote their progress in learning.
13. Maintain a consistent and positive approach to managing pupils’ behaviour.
1. To provide personal care when needed, respecting the dignity and privacy of the individual at all times.
2. To ensure the safety and well-being of pupils – pro-actively managing safeguarding principles and practices.
3. To maintain a safe, creative and stimulating environment for all pupils’ social, leisure, physical and recreational activities.
4. Ensure that all pupils are supervised indoors and outdoors over the lunchtime period so that it runs smoothly.
5. Supervise and care for any pupil who has an accident or becomes ill during the lunchtime break following school’s first aid procedures.
Be involved in pupils’ play, encouraging their involvement and helping them to build positive relationships.
You will have the following skills/ experience.
Level 3 Childcare Qualification as recognised by OFQUAL
Work effectively with pupils with special educational needs
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work within and apply all school policies e.g. behaviour management, child protection, Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities
Commitment to excellence in all aspects of work
Experience of promoting children’s physical and emotional wellbeing during non-class learning sessions throughout the extended school day, including those with special educational needs
Ability to provide levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate to pupils’ needs, encouraging the pupils to stay on task
Ability to establish positive relationships with pupils and empathise with their needs
A Ability to monitor the pupils’ response to the learning activities and, where appropriate, modify or adapt the activities as agreed with the teacher to achieve the intended learning outcomes
