Surrounded by beautiful Cornish moorland and just 20 minutes from the stunning coastline, Callington Community College is an average sized rural 11-18 comprehensive school with approximately 900 students on roll. The College has a catchment area of approximately 300 squares miles, with 70% of students arriving by bus every day. Officially there are 11 feeder primary schools in the Callington cluster. However, students are drawn from nearly 30 different primary schools each year.
Student stability is consistently around 91%, which is in line with the national average. 25% of students are considered disadvantaged and 2.1% of students have an EHC Plan.
In 2015, the predecessor school was judged as ‘Inadequate’ due primarily to safeguarding issues and became a sponsored academy by Ivybridge Community College in 2016. In 2017, the College formally joined the Westcountry Schools Trust, a group of 22 schools of which 7 were secondary and 15 primary. A Section 8 Ofsted inspection in July 2017, deemed that safeguarding was effective in the school. The school currently is Ofsted rated as ‘Requires Improvement’.
Despite this period of turbulence, the College is rapidly improving and is now well placed to move forward at pace. There is an energetic and dynamic governing body, a passionate and enthusiastic team of staff and of course wonderful students. The successful candidate has the unique opportunity to build upon the College’s foundations, utilising its incredible potential, and lead the next stage of Callington’s exciting journey towards ‘Good’ and beyond.
