Snapethorpe Primary is a large school with over 680 pupils and over 100 staff on role. We were inspected by Ofsted in June 2017 and judged to be an ‘outstanding school’, this was a consecutive ‘outstanding’ judgement following a previous inspection in March 2013. We have a strong vision of how our school should continue to grow and develop; we are always looking for people to join our team who can offer inspirational and exciting new ideas to help make the education of our pupils fun, interesting and challenging. At Snapethorpe Primary School, we encourage the philosophy of the ‘whole school’ approach to the life and work of our school. All members of our school community are valued and respected as individuals, as well as members of the whole school team. We believe that everyone connected with our school is of worth and has particular skills and talents. In a spirit of co-operation and community we provide a learning environment, which promotes social, emotional and academic potential. We broaden the children’s horizons, giving them confidence in their own abilities, enabling them to respect others and care for the world in which they live. High standards of work and well-mannered considerate behaviour will always be of utmost importance to anyone connected with our school. We are committed to the development of all of our staff in order to continually improve the standards of teaching and learning at our school, thus raising levels of achievement for all our children. We are, as a whole staff, committed to a high level of performance both as individuals and as a team. Performance Management will focus attention on effective teaching and monitoring of continual professional development. We will provide appropriate and effective personal training to develop a high level of expertise, to aid career progression and to ensure job satisfaction. Snapethorpe Primary School is on the outskirts of Wakefield, in close proximity to J40 of the M1. We expanded in 2012 as a result of the closure of our local primary school and now have 650 children on roll. The catchment area is one of the most deprived areas in Wakefield we are ranked 110th/113th in the district. Around 55% of our children are classed as Disadvantaged pupils, and around 25% of our children are on our SEN register. We have some Children In Care, and a number of children subject to Child Protection plans and CAF plans or involvement with Social Care. Our traditional building is spacious, clean and tidy. We are fortunate to be set in huge grounds that offer hard and grass surfaces for play. They provide considerable scope for recreational and sporting activities, as well as facilitating first-hand experience in other curricular areas. There are two enclosed courtyards with established trees, gardens, a pond and planting areas suitable for environmental and other outdoor education. At Snapethorpe we aim to create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for children, staff, parents, governors and visitors. We also provide a secure and well disciplined, stimulating and attractive learning environment. These are important principles of the school. Securing teaching and learning that are proven to raise levels of achievement and attainment for all children is our highest priority. We are promoting a nurturing and respectful ethos at our school, valuing the contribution that the whole staff team makes to the children’s overall education. Children within our school are encouraged, by courtesy and kindness, to develop considerate relationships with one another and with adults. Through a well-planned creative curriculum, we aim to meet the needs of all our children by developing their independence, curiosity, co-operation and tolerance, as a preparation for their adult life. Parents support and involvement in school life is good and developing. The Governing Body is actively involved in the running of the school. Members of the wider community are actively encouraged to become partners, working with staff and governors to promote the best quality of education for our children. We have a positive behaviour policy which gives high priority to developing self-esteem, using co-operative approaches to solve problems and to developing a climate of mutual trust and respect. As a ‘Restorative school’ we are teaching children to resolve conflict peacefully. ‘Praise’ is the hallmark of our discipline policy and there is an agreed level of minimum accepted standards which, whilst adding to the group ethos, do not detract from individuality, however sanctions are applied when required as per the policy. We have high but realistic expectations of the children in relationships, curriculum, activities, behaviour and classroom organisation and we ensure that the children know what these expectations are. Our staff team has a good balance of youth, experience and enthusiasm. We are both friendly and supportive with high expectations of all staff for working hard to maintain a calm and positive ethos, as well as extremely high standards of pupil behaviour, attainment and achievement.
