Team Leader - History and Politics job summary
TEAM LEADER – HISTORY AND POLITICS (TPR + TLR 2B £4,785)
Required for September 2021
Imagine what’s possible…
History has a vitally important role in the whole college curriculum at Newton Abbot College. It is a core and compulsory subject at key stage 3 and all students must study a Humanities subject (History or Geography) at GCSE. It has become increasingly popular as an A level subject at the College as standards and outcomes have improved and engagement has increased lower down the college.
The outgoing postholder took on the role when standards and outcomes in History were poor and it was listed in an historical ofsted report as a subject requiring improvement. In turn, back then, it was the ‘ugly sister’ in the Humanities department with poor examination results and low student numbers at Key Stages 4 and 5. Marked improvements in the History curriculum, the quality of teaching and outcomes for students now mean that History and Geography ‘compete’ more evenly.
This is an exciting time for the department, and the successful applicant, as the team look to ‘kick on’ to the next level. Politics A level was only introduced at the college this year and we are seeing our first cohort of year 12s really enjoy the subject. They will obviously move through to year 13, and the second year of their course, and we are hopeful to recruit good numbers to this course from the current year 11. Whilst it would be an advantage, the successful applicant need not necessarily teach Politics A level – any more than a Head of Science would be expected to teach all three Sciences to Key Stage 5. They will of course, however, be responsible for the team of History and Politics teachers (3 including the Team Leader) and be held accountable for the standards and outcomes in both subjects.
We are seeking an exceptional individual with drive, passion, enthusiasm and ambition to lead our History and Politics Department into the next phase of its development and beyond. Your challenge will be to lead the team to teach very highly quality lessons, leading to high levels of student progress and excellent outcomes.
Are you:
- an inspirational, dedicated and forward-thinking classroom practitioner
- able to teach excellent History lessons up to A Level (the ability to teach Politics A level would be an advantage)
- committed to raising standards
- creative and committed to driving improvements in learning
- able to lead the curriculum inside and outside the classroom and raise the profile of History and Politics in the College?
You will:
- demonstrate excellent planning, communication and organisational skills
- be able to ensure continuous progress and consistent high attainment for all students
- have incredibly high expectations
- be able to motivate your team to further progress with their teaching, results and professional development
- believe that all students are capable of success.
We welcome applications from those looking for their first promotion or those with middle leadership experience. If you think you can make a difference to our students and relish the idea of leading our highly motivated team in the delivery of excellence in education, then we want to hear from you!
