The John Roan School - Head of Drama job summary

Founded in 1677, as one of the oldest state schools in the country The John Roan School has a distinguished history of supporting educational excellence for the young people of Greenwich.

We believe that education should be a positive and transformational experience, regardless of ability or background. We are fully committed to raising achievement for everyone and have the highest expectations of all our students in every aspect of school life. Our vision is for students to be the best that they can be, and our role is to provide them with the platform to achieve this.

At The John Roan School we pledge to provide a rich, broad and varied education such that all students are able to make excellent progress whatever their starting points. In the seven years that students grow and develop with the school, they will experience a diverse curriculum and enrichment programme that stretches them academically and socially.

We have a split site, with a new, state-of-the-art building at Westcombe Park and a dedicated sixth form centre on the historic Maze Hill site. Students at The John Roan School also benefit from access to Braithwaite’, an activity centre in the Lake District and extensive playing fields and sport facilities, as part of our commitment to providing an education with character.

We are looking for the right people to join our team. The Head of Drama position would suit a highly motivated and skilled practitioner looking to join a thriving school as a middle leader.  We want to hear from applicants who wish to build on our improvements, share our vision for providing an outstanding environment for learning and character development and who, like us, value drive, integrity, scholarship and contribution.

The Head of Drama is a hugely important role as The John Roan School continues to grow and thrive. You will be joining a school that is ambitious for its future as well as the future of all its students and so we are looking for colleagues who share that ambition and are uncompromising in their commitment to doing what it takes to secure the potential of the young people here.

We have great facilities for Drama at the school, with a purpose-built Drama Studio in each of our two sites and a wonderful School Hall fully kitted out with stage lighting. Our links with external partners are strong and we regularly host the Box Clever Theatre Company for their rehearsals in residence, allowing our students to meet and observe actors and production teams as they prepare for their tours.

The Drama department works closely with Music and Art in the school and has a tradition of staging at least one Musical a year. We are supported with additional funding from the John Roan Foundation and by a thriving PTA group who will readily volunteer time and contacts to support student development.

All students in years 7, 8 & 9 have weekly Drama lessons and GCSE Drama is firmly on our curriculum. With a growing and successful Sixth Form we are hoping to expand our Drama curriculum into Post 16.

The John Roan School values personal development, and on joining the school you will have a wealth of opportunities to develop through our internal CPD programmes and within the United Learning group of schools. We are also ambitious about diversity and inclusion, so very much look forward to meeting candidates whose values reflect those in the job description to follow.

We hope that you find the information you need within this pack and on our school website, but we are also very happy to host a visit from prospective candidates so that you can get a full sense of the school. If you would like to visit, please email tracey.arnold@thejohnroanschool.org.uk.
