What skills and experience we're looking for


▪ Good subject knowledge of Religious Education, but if you have a degree in a different subject we can provide support to widen your support knowledge

▪ High standard of written and oral communication

Ability to teach Religious Education (RE) to KS3 and core RE to KS5

▪ Excellent classroom teacher, or potential to be one, with the ability to reflect on lessons and continually improve their practice

▪ Willingness to lead extracurricular learning activities after school.

▪ Ability to contribute to a culture of high expectations amongst students and staff within their curriculum area, both academic and in terms of behaviour and attitudes

The Saint John Henry Newman School is a popular 11-18 mixed Catholic comprehensive school in Stevenage, and is a member of the Diocese of Westminster Academy Trust. The school serves the Catholic community across north Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and as far south as Hatfield, with pupils from more than 25 different parishes. It has an excellent reputation; it is heavily oversubscribed and there are continuing interest lists for all year groups. The roll is currently approximately1600, including 400 in the Sixth Form. The school has benefitted from considerable investment in its buildings, including a new £3.5 million Sports and Performing block (The Pavilion) and a substantial new build programme to replace our main building and Art block.

Since its foundation in 1987, the school has developed a reputation for excellent educational standards combined with unique opportunities to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. This academic success has been acknowledged by the Department for Education, who have written to the school and acknowledged its excellent performance, commenting that The Saint John Henry Newman School is one of the top 90 schools in the country on one measure and in the top 100 schools in the country on another measure.
