VI Learning Support Assistant job summary

We have approximately 1500 pupils in the Trust taught and supported by around 300 staff and we plan to grow the Trust over the coming years. Teamwork and collaboration is a particular feature of our Trust with staff working across schools to support each other, offering excellent career progression opportunities.

At Chantry, our school ethos is built upon our unique school values (which incorporate British Values), these include unity, respect, tolerance, and friendship. With high expectations and standards, exciting wow-factors and a book based learning experience, fostering a love of reading, we believe that Chantry offers an excellent educational experience for our pupils.

Chantry is a successful school which is a unique and exciting place to be. Children succeed at Chantry thanks to high quality learning experiences provided by our extensive and dedicated team. They also enjoy our creative approach to learning and feel secure in our caring school environment.

We would like to appoint a dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join our dynamic Visual Impairment Provision. Chantry Primary Academy has the only primary Visual Impairment Provision in Bedfordshire.

The provision is entirely inclusive and is extremely popular with parents, due to the high levels of specialist resources and support children access, to enhance their educational experience.

All pupils are taught in mainstream classes alongside their peers and are supported in lessons by Specialist Support Assistants who are overseen by our VI Provision leader, who is a Qualified Teacher of Visual Impairment.

Your role as VI learning support assistant would be focused on meeting the needs of our visually impaired pupils within the mainstream setting of our primary school. You will be supported by our experienced visual impairment teacher and the VI LSA’s within the team. You will have access to a range of in-house training and VI resources. This role will help you to develop your experience of working with children who have a visual impairment. These children may also have additional special needs such as autism, that require more structured in-class support.

You will be supporting our visually impaired children within the classroom environment, in small groups and sometimes on a 1-1 basis.

Your role will be to liaise with the class teachers to ensure all classwork has been adapted and enlarged, to enable each child to visually access their learning. You would be helping children to develop their independence and life skills daily. You will take part in enrichment activities, such as horse riding and exclusive soft play trips to support the children’s social and emotional development.

Experience of supporting visually impaired children within a primary mainstream setting is desirable, but not essential as we offer in house training.
