POST: Vulnerable Learner Lead (SENCo and Deputy DSL)
GRADE: Main Scale / UPS and TLR2
RESPONSIBLE TO:Headteacher
JOB PURPOSE To lead and manage a SEND provision strategically and effectively using a child centred approach. To develop positive and beneficial relationships with professional agencies associated with the school and initiate actions in line with the school development plan and/or planned local and national initiatives. To monitor staff performance and initiate a robust quality assurance programme to ensure the school achieves excellence in every aspect of provision for vulnerable learners. To take lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection (including online safety). To ensure a robust culture of safeguarding exists in the school, with clear processes and systems for safeguarding securely in place and followed by all staff. To ensure all staff receive effective safeguarding training in line with statutory requirements. To liaise effectively with external agencies in relation to safeguarding to support the welfare of children.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Secure high-quality teaching and learning for Vulnerable learners, especially SEND pupils and deploy effective use of resources to bring about improved standards of achievement
Build effective partnerships with professional agencies to ensure high quality support for children and families.
Ensure safeguarding procedures consistently meet/exceed expected standards.
Develop partnerships with families which ensure enhanced success and progress for pupils.
Develop a system for effective quality assurance of all programmes of activity.
Lead in the support, advice and guidance of all staff in relation to SEND and Safeguarding.
Develop collaborative work between identified schools and other educational settings, services and agencies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic direction of SEN provision
Support the development of effective systems of communication including feedback about Vulnerable pupil’s learning to inform future planning.
Monitor the quality of SEN support by establishing effective systems to identify and meet the needs of pupils whilst ensuring that the systems are coordinated, evaluated, regularly reviewed and value for money.
Ensure that the objectives of the SEN policy are reflected in the school. Liaise with and coordinate the contribution of external agencies.
Have an up-to-date knowledge of National and local initiatives which may impact upon policy and practice.
Teaching and learning
Influence the whole Teaching and Learning policy to promote aspects of inclusive teaching.
Lead INSET where appropriate for all stakeholder groups.
Observe colleagues and visit other schools in order to share best practice and enhance personal skill base.
Interpret assessment data gathered on pupils (both in terms of Vulnerable learners and Safeguarding) and use to inform practice and provision.
Work with pupils, subject leaders and class teachers to ensure appropriate expectations of behaviour and achievement are set for SEN pupils.
Support developments and initiatives to improve standards in English and Maths as well as access to the wider curriculum. This includes EYFS (Nursery and Reception).
Oversee and monitor the quality of Pupil Profiles and maintain detailed information for subsequent meetings with parents.
Develop tracking and monitoring systems to record progress made by pupils on the SEN register and monitor their achievement of targets set in Pupil Profiles.
Meet statutory responsibilities for EHCPs and their Annual Review.
Ensure appropriate risk assessments, behaviour plans and other supportive documentation is up to date
Leading and managing staff
Encourage all staff to recognise and fulfil their statutory responsibilities
Develop proformas for essential repetitive paperwork, in order to create an administrative infrastructure as part of an effective communications system
Identify the training needs of staff and organise/coordinate INSET to be delivered by self and other professionals.
Disseminate procedural information such as recommendations of the code of practice, Oxfordshire guidance, or the schools own SEN and Vulnerable Learners policies.
Establish opportunities for SEN Teaching Assistants to review the needs, progress and targets of pupils with learning difficulties.
Provide regular information to the Headteacher, governing body and other stakeholders on the evaluation of the effectiveness of provision for pupils with SEN, to inform decision-making and policy review.
Deputy Designated Safeguard Lead (DDSL)
Provide support and advice to staff members to carry out their safeguarding duties.
Manage referrals and liaise closely with other services such as children’s social care.
Keep safeguarding records up to date, following all statutory guidance on record keeping.
Liaise with the Virtual School Headteacher for the progress of Previously Cared for Children (PCFC)
Promote the educational achievements of children who have been adopted and those with special guardianship order (SGOs).
Not to delegate their responsibility to others.
