Job overview:

The Board of Trustees of Wembley Multi-Academy Trust (WMAT) is seeking to appoint an outstanding and ambitious Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for Quality of Education.

As an expanding Multi-Academy Trust, we are committed to strengthening leadership capacity across our schools. We are therefore looking for an exceptional leader with a proven track record of securing outstanding academic outcomes, leading curriculum development, and driving excellence in teaching and learning at whole-school level.

The successful candidate will be an expert in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, with a relentless focus on securing exceptional progress for all groups of students. They will have experience of leading school improvement at scale and of developing middle and senior leaders to deliver consistently high standards.

WMAT is an established beacon of excellence, with two outstanding schools among the highest performing in the country. The successful candidate will be deeply committed to improving life chances and ensuring that every student, regardless of background, achieves academic excellence.

They will be highly analytical, intellectually rigorous and strategically astute. They will understand both the macro-level vision of curriculum design and the micro-level detail of classroom practice. Specific Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership of Curriculum and Academic Standards

  • To lead the strategic vision for Quality of Education across the College, ensuring a coherent, ambitious and knowledge-rich curriculum for all students.
  • To ensure that curriculum intent, implementation and impact are sharply defined, rigorously monitored and demonstrably strong across all subjects and key stages.
  • To secure consistently outstanding academic outcomes at KS3, KS4 and KS5, including for disadvantaged students and students with SEND.
  • To ensure curriculum sequencing enables students to know more, remember more and apply their learning with fluency and confidence.
  • To oversee assessment strategy, ensuring it is purposeful, proportionate and used precisely to identify misconceptions and secure improvement.
  • To lead strategies that ensure students are exceptionally well prepared for examinations, further study and top university destinations

Teaching, Learning and Professional Development

  • To secure consistently high-quality teaching across the College through rigorous quality assurance, coaching and instructional leadership.
  • To develop and embed a shared understanding of effective pedagogy, rooted in evidence-informed practice.
  • To design and lead a high-impact programme of professional development that strengthens subject expertise, curriculum delivery and classroom practice.
  • To line manage Curriculum Leaders and Assistant Headteachers within the Quality of Education team, holding them to account for standards, outcomes and improvement.
  • To identify underperformance swiftly and implement precise and effective intervention strategies.

Outcomes, Data and Standards

  • To lead whole-school analysis of progress and attainment data, ensuring forensic evaluation of trends and swift action where needed.
  • To ensure robust systems are in place to track the progress of all groups and close gaps rapidly.
  • To oversee reporting systems that provide clarity to staff, students and parents about progress and next steps.
  • To ensure examination entry strategies, early entry decisions and curriculum pathways are strategically planned to maximise achievement and aspiration.
  • To lead on the timetabling process using our in-house tools such as Nova T6.
  • To oversee the internal and external assessment and examination process.

Academic Culture and Student Scholarship

  • To cultivate a strong academic culture where scholarship, intellectual curiosity and high expectations are visible and celebrated.
  • To ensure students are explicitly taught how to revise, retrieve knowledge and develop independent study habits.
  • To embed high standards of academic conduct, ensuring classrooms are purposeful, calm and ambitious environments for learning.
  • To oversee enrichment, academic extension and super-curricular opportunities that support students in securing places at top universities and competitive destinations.

Strategy, Policy and Quality Assurance

  • To provide inspiring and purposeful leadership across all aspects of academic provision.
  • To implement, monitor and evaluate strategic priorities relating to curriculum, teaching and outcomes.
  • To ensure that policies and practices align with the College’s vision, values and statutory requirements.
  • To lead preparation for inspection and external review relating to Quality of Education.
  • To work as part of the Senior Leadership Team to secure sustained excellence across the Academy and Trust.

Qualifications & Experience

We are looking for a leader with a successful track record of school improvement. You will have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status, Degree, further relevant professional studies.
  • A willingness to undertake an NPQ or relevant/equivalent training.
  • Values that align with WMAT.
  • An understanding of what it takes to work with others and help lead one of the highest achieving schools in the country.
  • A track record of securing tangible success and outstanding outcomes.
  • The technical ability and behavioural traits that secure the confidence of all stakeholders.
  • Experience of developing a culture of learning and continuous improvement of staff and students.
  • Strong monitoring and evaluation skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of current developments and the latest educational research (such as curriculum development and how pupils learn).
  • An ability to set up systems and processes to ensure departmental improvement.
  • An ability to understand people’s individual strengths, harness and develop them.
  • A commitment to learning and leading with humility.
