Y1 Teacher and Maths Leader job summary

At Maun Infants, we are passionate about giving our children the best possible start to school life. Our dedicated and hardworking team go the extra mile to ensure that all our children and their families are well looked after during their time with us. The school values sit at the heart of our strong ethos and our approach is a partnership between nurture and challenge. We believe learning should be fun, exciting and engaging, and are constantly striving to ‘reach for the stars’ by being the best that we can be. As specialists in early years education, we believe firmly that it is our job to equip our children with secure foundations on which their lifelong learning will build. This includes competence with core skills in reading, writing and maths whilst also recognising the importance of the broader curriculum.

We are seeking to appoint a strong teacher and Maths Leader to join the Maun team from January 2022 (or as soon as possible after this), and are keen to appoint the right person to share their skills within our supportive team and successful school. We welcome applications from teachers with proven capability in Key Stage 1, though experience and knowledge of the EYFS curriculum would also be desirable to support the leadership role.

This post would be to teach in Year 1 initially, though applicants should be open to the prospect of teaching in other areas of school as required in the future. It would particularly suit a teacher with 3-5 years of successful teaching experience and 2-3 years of effective leadership experience, who is now ready for further career development through leadership of a core curriculum area.

The successful candidate will be someone with a sound understanding of the mastery approach in maths, who can demonstrate proven personal ability for achieving strong pupil outcomes in this area. They will share our passion for learning breadth and be able to plan creatively to ensure this is prioritised alongside development of core basic skills. They will also recognise the importance of promoting positive mental health and will actively support our whole school wellbeing drive, including through effective modelling within their own behaviours.

We believe our staff are our most valuable resource and aim for all to feel effective, valued and happy in their roles. As a core curriculum leader, the successful candidate can expect leadership support including coaching, matched to their career stage and experience, in order to sustain their own continued professional development alongside the development of the school. We also recognise the link between staff wellbeing and workload, and constantly seek to ensure our everyday practice strikes a positive balance between the two (see our approach to ‘Workload and Wellbeing’ outlined separately within the application pack).

We are looking for a teacher who is:

• Creative, imaginative and passionate about all children having high quality learning experiences across the curriculum;
• Forward-thinking, positive, energetic, reflective and highly motivated;
• Committed to raising standards and working effectively alongside senior leaders to drive whole-school improvement, especially in Maths;
• Actively supportive of the school’s drive to encourage positive mental health and wellbeing, including through physical activity and singing;
• Able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
• Committed to working in partnership with our families.

In return we can offer you:

• A strong and positive commitment to on-going professional development;
• Support from all levels within the staff team and governing body;
• A small school feel with a hardworking and dedicated team who are well-motivated to do their best for our children;
• A warm and welcoming learning environment within which all members of the team are valued;
• Happy, enthusiastic and friendly children who love to learn;
• A sense of humour and laughter, particularly when it’s needed the most!

Commitment to safeguarding

Our school is committed to protecting the safety and welfare of pupils. As a result, all posts will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and Barred List check, and Disqualification from Caring for Children Regulations (DCCR) disclosure, along with satisfactory references prior to commencement of employment.

Maun Infant and Nursery School is situated in New Ollerton, an ex-mining village just 3 miles from the legendary Sherwood Forest. It is a mixed area though some aspects of social deprivation do exist. The school was built in the 1970s and was largely open plan until recently, when a building project modernised the internal school layout with walls and doors to separate classrooms throughout KS1, and to more clearly define shared areas.

There are currently four classes in Key Stage 1: two Year 1 and two Year 2. Our two F2 classes are housed within the main school building, sharing their space for free-flow indoor and outdoor activities as part of the Early Years Curriculum. Maun Nursery occupies a separate building and outdoor play area, with up to 39 children in each morning and afternoon session. Across the school, the learning environment is welcoming and celebratory of our children’s achievements.

The Maun team is a strong and creative one; we all work well together and are committed to promoting the strong school ethos whilst driving the curriculum using a project-based approach to make learning-links. We also work collaboratively with the families of our pupils and see this as crucial in helping children maximise their life chances.

We strive to empower pupils in their own learning, making very good progress through the provision of an innovative curriculum which is delivered through consistently high-quality teaching. Our curriculum enables active learning which is well-matched to the interests and needs of our children, whilst making good use of our fabulous grounds. Our drive for excellence has seen us regularly updating our curriculum, to make the most of local learning opportunities and to meet the needs of our community. We are committed to providing an integrated approach to curriculum planning while meeting the objectives of national requirements. We keenly recognise the value in learning breadth, especially in areas such as art, music, dance and drama to positively enhance curriculum learning and promote positive mental health and wellbeing amongst our pupils.

At the end of Key Stage 1, pupils transfer to The Forest View Academy, the Key Stage 2 school which shares our site. We are involved in on-going, close partnership work with our KS2 colleagues to ensure an effective transition programme is in place.
