What skills and experience we're looking for

We are looking to expand our team of SUMMIT 1:1 Intervention Mentors at Millside SEMH Specialist School in Slough. Millside School is part of Haybrook College Alternative Provision Academy which also has four unique programmes at KS4 and a range of ‘revolving door’ provisions at KS3/KS4. These have proven to be highly successful in supporting young people to maintain their mainstream school place or return to another mainstream school.

Millside School has over 70 pupils in Key Stage 3 and 4, all of whom have Education, Health and Care Plans for Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs (SEMH). Our shared aim is to help our pupils to make positive behaviour choices and become independent learners with positive futures. If you want to find out more about Haybrook College, look at our website www.haybrookcollege.co.uk to see the different programmes on offer.

Our team of SUMMIT (Supportive, Understanding, Motivational, Mentoring and Individualised Teaching) Mentors take responsibility for the 1:1 individual programmes of exceptionally vulnerable young people with SEMH. The key responsibilities are:

  • To organise and deliver SUMMIT Programmes for students who struggle to engage with learning.
  • To deliver individualised teaching and mentoring programmes both on site, but out of class, and offsite to support individual pupils’ progress.
  • To organise and manage an appropriate learning environment and resources, write reports and support the collection and maintenance of data measuring pupil behaviour, attendance and academic achievement as required.

What the school offers its staff

Early finish Fridays (1.30pm).

Further information about the job

The candidate will be required to undergo a full enhanced DBS check and must be eligible to work in the UK.
Visas cannot be sponsored.
If you're interested in teaching or training to teach in England as an international citizen, we can help you understand your next steps.

Millside School has a creative, solution focused approach which includes:

  • nurturing tutor groups, of up to 7 pupils in KS3 that support the transition from Primary to Secondary, aiming to develop independence and resilience at each student’s own pace;
  • our KS3 curriculum uses links across subjects to make learning feel more meaningful and allows students to develop their own interests and mastery across the curriculum;
  • a full suite of Entry Level, GCSE and vocational qualifications completed during Year 10-11, so that students can move onto post-16 college, training or employment with qualifications in Maths, Statistics, English Language and Literature, Science, ICT, Art/ 3D Design and other more specialist courses including Arts Award and the Duke of Edinburgh Award;
  • our weekly ‘Thought for the week’ themes which focus on the values we wish to promote and share: for example Courage, Kindness, Truth, Inclusion and the traits that make for a caring community and a healthy body and mind;
  • daily mentoring and learning support from our Sports Coach Mentors, as well as personalised interventions from our Intervention Mentors for those pupils who require greater support with attendance and engagement in learning;
  • and finally, a ‘family atmosphere’ whereby we celebrate success through our reward assemblies and activities, we eat together daily and we share responsibility for the care of our therapeutic Millside pets.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and the position may close earlier if the right candidate is found.
