1:1 SEND Learning Support Assistant job summary

1:1 SEND LSA

24 hours per week plus 5 hours lunchtime supervision

Temporary until 31st August 2024

Main purpose of the job:

To assist in promoting the learning and personal development of the pupil to whom you are assigned, to enable him/her to make best use of the educational opportunities available to them.

The pupil's primary need is speech, language and communication and is currently on the Autism pathway for an assessment. The successful candidate will be supported by the class teacher, SENDCO and outside professionals to provide the following:

  • Identify/read the child's needs and respond to them with the use of visuals (communication board, objects of reference, symbols, photos, modelling language) so that the child can communicate his wants and needs.
  • Use simple language, visuals, now and next approach, intensive interaction/play so that the child can follow the routines/instructions and access the classroom/curriculum.
  • Support the child take turns with peers in a structured activity so that they can build up positive relationships with others.
  • Identify/read the child's sensory needs and respond to them with the use of sensory resources/strategies so that the child can receive a sensory diet which supports emotional regulation.
  • Support with personal care needs - the child currently wears nappies and has an intimate care plan in place.
  • Support the child to understand how to stay safe and use resources safely.

Working under the direction of the class teacher, to aid the pupil to engage and learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:

Welcoming the pupil into school

Liaising with parents/carers

Clarifying and explaining instructions

Ensuring the pupil is able to use equipment and materials provided

Motivating and encouraging the pupil as required by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate to pupils’ needs

Supporting in targeted areas, e.g. social interaction, confidence building, self-esteem, speech and language, turn taking, communication

Using praise, commentary and assistance to encourage the pupil to concentrate and stay on task

Liaising with class teacher, Inclusion Manager and other professionals about SEND Support Plans, provision maps and Education Health Care Plans as appropriate, contributing to the evaluation of outcomes, planning and delivery as appropriate

Providing additional nurture to individuals when requested by the class teacher or Inclusion Manager

Consistently and effectively implementing agreed behaviour management strategies

Helping to make appropriate resources to support the pupil

To establish supportive relationships with the pupil concerned

To promote the acceptance and inclusion of the pupil with SEN, encouraging pupils to interact with each other in an appropriate and acceptable manner

Monitor the pupil’s response to the learning activities and, where appropriate, modify or adapt the activities as agreed with the teacher to achieve the intended learning outcomes.

To give positive encouragement, feedback and praise to reinforce and sustain the pupil’s efforts and develop self-reliance and self-esteem.

To support the pupil in developing social skills both in and out of the classroom

To support the use of ICT in learning activities and with specific programmes to support learning

To provide regular feedback on the pupil’s learning and behaviour to the teacher/SENCO, including feedback on the effectiveness of the behaviour strategies adopted

Under the direction of the teacher, carry out and report on systematic observations of pupils to gather evidence of their knowledge, understanding and skills upon which the teacher makes judgements about their stage of development

Castle Hills is a mixed Primary Academy for children aged 3-11 years old. We currently have 286 children on roll and provide Nursery provision to include 30 hours per week.
