Abbey Hill Academy & College, an all-through special academy catering for children with a diverse range of needs, is seeking to appoint a dynamic and highly motivated Assistant Department Lead to join our college team.
As Assistant Department Lead, you will play a crucial role in the day-to-day management and organisation of main pathway programmes within our college department. You will be an excellent classroom practitioner, committed to ensuring the educational progress of all students, and will line manage and appraise identified staff. A key aspect of this role will be teaching Sports to our post-16 learners and leading the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, promoting physical development, teamwork, and valuable life skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the College Lead in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the college department
- Take specific responsibility and accountability for the day-to-day management and organisation of main pathway programmes within our college department
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning within the main pathways
- Support the development and delivery of a high-quality curriculum that is ambitious and meets the needs of all learners
- Effectively manage resources allocated to main pathways, including staffing, budgets, and equipment (as appropriate)
- Act as a reviewer with the arrangements for the appraisal of all identified staff
- Identify and address the professional development needs of staff within main pathways
- Plan, deliver, and assess engaging and appropriate Sports lessons for post-16 learners with SEND
- Lead the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme, including coordinating expeditions, assessing progress, and promoting participation
We are looking for a candidate who:
- Has Qualified Teacher Status
- Has recent leadership and management experience
- Has teaching experience in a special school setting
- Has extensive experience of working with students with SEND
- Possesses effective communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships
- Is committed to getting the best outcomes for all students and promoting the ethos and values of the academy
- Has a passion for sports and outdoor activities, and experience in delivering sports education
- Has experience of leading the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme or a willingness to undertake relevant training
