Assistant Head and Yr 6 Teacher job summary

Assistant Headteacher (Year 6 Class Teacher & DSL)

Alderman Cogan’s Church of England Primary Academy Leading on Supporting Behaviour & Safeguarding

Salary: L1- L5 Contract: Full-Time, Permanent (50% Teaching Commitment) Start Date: September 2026

The Role

Are you a Year 6 specialist with a passion for pastoral care? Alderman Cogan’s is seeking a dynamic Assistant Headteacher to join our leadership team. This role is a unique blend of high-impact classroom teaching and strategic pastoral leadership.

You will lead a Year 6 class, ensuring our oldest pupils reach their full potential, while serving as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). You will be the architect of a school culture where positive behaviour is the norm and every child feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.

Key Responsibilities
  • Year 6 Excellence: Deliver high-quality, inspiring teaching to our Year 6 cohort for 50% of the week, driving progress and preparing pupils for their transition to secondary school.

  • Behaviour & Inclusion Lead: Develop and oversee a trauma-informed, consistent approach to behaviour management across the academy, supporting staff in managing complex needs.

  • Lead DSL: Manage the safeguarding team, maintain robust records (CPOMS), and be the decisive voice in protecting our most vulnerable learners.

  • Strategic SLT Member: Contribute to the wider school improvement plan, specifically focusing on how behaviour and safety impact learning outcomes.

Who You Are
  • A Year 6 Expert: You understand the nuances of the Upper Key Stage 2 curriculum and have a proven track record of securing excellent progress for pupils.

  • A Compassionate Authority: You lead on behaviour with a blend of high expectations and deep empathy, understanding the "why" behind a child's actions.

  • Safeguarding Savvy: You are an experienced DSL who remains calm under pressure and can navigate the complexities of multi-agency working.

  • A Role Model: You can effectively transition from the "heat" of a Year 6 classroom to a strategic leadership meeting without losing your focus or your wit.

What We Offer
  • A school with a strong Christian heart and a "family" feel.

  • Dedicated "Leadership Time" to fulfil DSL and Behaviour lead duties.

  • A supportive staff team who are committed to the wellbeing of every child.

  • Professional development tailored to senior leadership and trauma-informed practice.
