Assistant Head of Maths job summary
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Teacher of Maths, who will become one of our Assistant Heads of Maths, to join a lively and enthusiastic Maths department, based in a new £2 million building at Cheltenham Bournside School, where Maths is a very popular subject.
The successful candidate will be a key part of the team, who will have responsibility for the coordination of curriculum development of a Key Stage, building on the strengths of the department to develop new and exciting initiatives. You will teach Maths, and A Level Maths to highly motivated and talented students from Years 7 to 13, planning and preparing courses and lessons according to their educational needs and providing guidance and advice on their further education and future careers. You will be joining a Maths department consisting of the Director of Maths, 3 Assistant Heads, and 8 teachers.
The Maths department occupies a central place in the academic life of the school, with the teaching of Maths grounded in supporting students to acquire a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, which they can then apply in a range of situations. The curriculum is carefully planned to support and extend the acquisition of knowledge and understanding.
A balanced Maths programme, incorporating most of the features of the National Curriculum, is taught to students in Years 7, 8 & 9. Each class has 1 or 2 Maths teachers. In Year 10, students start their GCSE EDEXCEL syllabus course. A large number of students go on to study Maths and Further Maths at A Level following the EDEXCEL exam course; post-18 the high numbers that choose Maths courses at university are in stark contrast to national norms. Attainment of students is above the national average at GCSE and typically in the top 25% of the country at A Level.
